TLDR
In this article, a novel approach to the study of the conformational behavior of water-soluble polymers is reported, based upon the generation of stabilized, room temperature phosphorescence using mobile "heavy-atom" promoters (Tl+).

Membrane-destabilizing polyanions: interaction with lipid bilayers and endosomal escape of biomacromolecules

TL;DR: The pH-dependent conformational behavior of these polymers in aqueous solution is described in detail and studies characterizing their interactions with phospholipid bilayers at neutral as well as at acidic pH are reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Studies of the smart thermoresponsive behavior of copolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide and N, N-dimethylacrylamide in dilute aqueous solution

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of altering the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance in a series of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM)/N,N-dimethylacrylide (DMAC) statistical copolymers upon the smart thermal responses of these systems in dilute aqueous solution were studied.

Fluorescence investigations of the thermally induced conformational transition of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

TL;DR: In this paper, fluorescence techniques, including quenching and time-resolved anisotropy measurements (TRAMS) on ultra-dilute (10−3 ) aqueous solutions of an acenaphthylene labelled sample, provide conclusive evidence that a coil collapse mechanism is implicated in the thermoreversible behavior: the polymer undergoes a conformational switch from an open coil below 32°C to a compact, globular structure above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST).

Conformation of Poly(methacrylic acid) Chains in Dilute Aqueous Solution

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a comprehensive investigation of the conformational switch of poly(methacrylic acid) using techniques which report on various length scales: fluorescence energy transfer experiments provide unique information on the nanometer length scale while dynamic light scattering (DLS) offers an insight into longer range interactions involved in the transition.
Journal ArticleDOI

Manipulating the Thermoresponsive Behavior of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). 1. On the Conformational Behavior of a Series of N-Isopropylacrylamide−Styrene Statistical Copolymers

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of hydrophobic modification upon the thermoresponsive behavior of NIPAM-based polymers have been studied using time-resolved (fluorescence) anisotropy (TRAMS).

Environmental effects on vibronic band intensities in pyrene monomer fluorescence and their application in studies of micellar systems

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that in the presence of polar solvents, there is a significant enhancement in the intensity of the 0-0 vibronic band at the expense of other bands.

Solvent Effect on the Vibrational Structures of the Fluorescence and Absorption Spectra of Pyrene

TL;DR: In this article, the anomalously large Ham effect observed in pyrene has been studied in various solvents at room temperature by measuring the fluorescence and absorption spectra, and the correlation of the intensities of the fluorescence and absorption bands to solvent polarities is discussed.

Time-resolved fluorescence study of chain dynamics. 1. Poly(methacrylic acid) in dilute water solutions

TL;DR: Fluorescence decay measurements of dansyl-labeled poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA) have shown that, at low pH, PMA chains form highly compact hydrophobic clusters, which are joined by short extended polymer chains as discussed by the authors.
