TLDR
Results of studies about the effects of maca on sexual function, spermatogenesis, female reproductive function, memory, depression and anxiety, and energy as well as effects on benign prostatic hyperplasia, osteoporosis and metabolic syndrome are summarized.Abstract:

Is the hype around the reproductive health claims of maca (Lepidium meyenii Walp.) justified
Shruti Beharry,Michael Heinrich +1 more
TL;DR: The health claims of maca cannot be fully supported from a scientific standpoint and more research is needed as it appears that the indigenous local knowledge about the health benefits of Maca has been dragged out of context to fit the demands of a growing market for herbal remedies.

Acceptability, Safety, and Efficacy of Oral Administration of Extracts of Black or Red Maca (Lepidium meyenii) in Adult Human Subjects: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study
Carla Gonzales-Arimborgo,Irma Yupanqui,Elsa Montero,Dulce E. Alarcón-Yaquetto,Alisson Zevallos-Concha,Lidia Caballero,Manuel Gasco,Jianping Zhao,Ikhlas A. Khan,Gustavo F. Gonzales +9 more
TL;DR: In conclusion, maca extract consumption relative to the placebo improved quality of life parameters, and both maca extracts were well tolerated and safe.

Chemical profiling analysis of Maca using UHPLC-ESI-Orbitrap MS coupled with UHPLC-ESI-QqQ MS and the neuroprotective study on its active ingredients
Yanyan Zhou,Peng Li,Adelheid Brantner,Hongjie Wang,Xinbin Shu,Jian Yang,Nan Si,Lingyu Han,Hai-Yu Zhao,Baolin Bian +9 more
TL;DR: The results suggested that Maca from Yunnan province was the potential substitute for the one from Peru, and the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholiersterase was a possible mechanism of its neuroprotective effect.
Lepidium meyenii ( Maca ) improved semen parameters in adult men
TL;DR: Treatment with Maca resulted in increased seminal volume, sperm count per ejaculum, motile sperm count, and sperm motility by mechanisms not related to LH, FSH, PRL, T and E2.
Effect of Lepidium meyenii (maca) roots on spermatogenesis of male rats
TL;DR: The Lepidium meyenii root invigorates spermatogenesis in male rats by acting on its initial stages (IX-XIV), which includes mitosis and seminiferous tubules.

TL;DR: Oral administration of M-01 and M-02 enhanced the sexual function of the mice and rats, as evidenced by an increase in the number of complete intromissions and the numberof sperm-positive females in normal mice, and a decrease in the LPE in male rats with erectile dysfunction.

Effect of Lepidium meyenii (Maca), a root with aphrodisiac and fertility-enhancing properties, on serum reproductive hormone levels in adult healthy men.
TL;DR: Test the hypothesis that Maca has no effect on serum reproductive hormone levels in apparently healthy men when administered in doses used for aphrodisiac and/or fertility-enhancing properties and showed that treatment with Maca does not affect serum reproductive hormones levels.

Lepidium meyenii (Maca) improved semen parameters in adult men.
TL;DR: Treatment with Maca resulted in increased seminal volume, sperm count per ejaculum, motile sperm count, and sperm motility and this was not related to dose of Maca.
