Mechanism of formation of antiwear films from zinc dialkyldithiophosphates

TLDR
In this article, an improved mechanism for the formation of lubricant-derived antiwear films, which accounts for a substantial body of experimental data, together with some unique observations resulting from their own investigations, was proposed.

An overview on the tribological behavior of diamond-like carbon in technical and medical applications

TL;DR: The most important subclasses of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings are hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) and hydrogen free tetrahedral amorphus carbon (ta-C) as discussed by the authors, which can be used in different industrial applications such as magnetic storage media, diesel injection pumps, sliding bearings, car valve rockers, gears, tappets of racing motorcycles, VCR head drums, textile industry parts, motor cycle forks, razor blades, etc.

Review of the lubrication of metallic surfaces by zinc dialkyl-dithiophosphates

TL;DR: A comprehensive review of the literature over the last 50 years provides insight into the overall picture of ZDDP by focussing on their chemical characterization, film formation mechanisms, properties and structure as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

Application of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy in chemical characterization of antiwear films generated by ZDDP Part I: the effects of physical parameters

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of physical parameters on the composition and mechanism of anti-wear film formation are discussed, and a new mechanism for anti-wear film formation is proposed based on the above information.
Journal ArticleDOI

Molecular Mechanisms for the Functionality of Lubricant Additives

TL;DR: The molecular origin of how antiwear films can form, function, and dissipate energy is unraveled from pressure-induced changes in the coordination number of atoms acting as cross-linking agents to form chemically connected networks.

Relationship between mechanical properties and structures of zinc dithiophosphate anti–wear films

TL;DR: In this paper, the structure and rheological properties of the antiwear films from a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDTP) solution generated in a rolling/sliding contact simulating engine valve train conditions were investigated.

The composition of lubricant-derived surface layers formed in a lubricated cam/tappet contact II. Effects of adding overbased detergent and dispersant to a simple ZDTP solution

TL;DR: In this article, the surface films formed by a set of oils of related additive chemistry, but with differing detergent and dispersant contents, have been chemically characterized using a combination of surface analysis techniques.

Lubricant-derived tribochemical films: an infra-red spectroscopic study

TL;DR: In this article, a cam/tappet tribometer with a removable friction disc in the tappet was used for analysis of the tribochemical films. But the results indicated that the films were not phosphate glasses as expected, but rather predominantly amorphous orthophosphates and pyrophosphates formed by thermo-oxidative decomposition of zinc dialkyldithiophosphate.
