Journal ArticleDOI
Application of acoustic emission techniques in manufacturing
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reviewed applications of acoustic emission sensing techniques in manufacturing processes and gave some background on the sensing needs in manufacturing for machine diagnostics as well as process monitoring, and illustrated some of the existing applications dating back to the first process monitoring in the 1970s.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analysis of acoustic emission in chatter vibration with tool wear effect in turning
Richard Chiou,Steven Y. Liang +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a dynamic model of the cutting RMS acoustic emission (AE) signal when chatter occurs in turning, and determine how this motion is related to the RMS AE signal in the presence of tool flank wear.
Journal ArticleDOI
Correlating tool life, tool wear and surface roughness by monitoring acoustic emission in finish turning
TL;DR: In this paper, a set of parameters of acoustic emission such as zero crossing rate, mean AErm and standard deviation of AErms were used to monitor the change of workpiece surface roughness caused by the increase of tool wear.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tool wear modeling through an analytic mechanistic model of milling processes
TL;DR: In this article, a mechanistic approach and force equilibrium expressions of the normal and friction loads acting on the flank surface of a cutting tool were used to predict cutting forces acting on a milling cutter.
Journal ArticleDOI
Acoustic emission monitoring of high speed grinding of silicon nitride
TL;DR: It is found that the amplitude of theAE signal monotonically increases with wheel wear, as do grinding forces and energy, which suggests that the AE signal could provide quantitative information of wheel wear in high-speed grinding, and could also be used to determine when the grinding wheel needs replacement.
