TLDR
The literature on the stirred tank reactor with consecutive reactions is reviewed and a census of multiplicity diagrams, bifurcation diagrams and phase portraits is given in this article, where the location of the organizing centre, introduced by Balakotaiah and Luss, and some features of the butterfly singularity are discussed with reference to variations in the ratio of activation energies.

Multiplicities and instabilities in chemically reacting systems — a review

TL;DR: In this paper, a review brings attention to much of the recent literature describing these developments and their applications, particularly regarding complex and chaotic oscillations, as well as reported experimental observations which, in many cases, have provided support for prior theory and in many others, have led to new theoretical developments.
Journal ArticleDOI

The use of particle swarm optimization for dynamical analysis in chemical processes

TL;DR: In this article, particle swarm optimization is employed to evaluate the parametric regions where different dynamic phenomena (periodic oscillations, double-period oscillations and chaos) can be expected in dynamic models.
Journal ArticleDOI

Chaos in deterministic systems: Strange attractors, turbulence, and applications in chemical engineering

TL;DR: In this article, an analysis of the particle trajectories (flows) provides a rational way to create chaotic (or good) mixing, and the authors suggest new experiments for discriminating between possible mechanisms and routes to complex or turbulent behavior.
Journal ArticleDOI

The dynamic behavior of continuous solution polymerization reactors—IV. Dynamic stability and bifurcation analysis of an experimental reactor

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed bifurcation analysis of a mathematical model of a laboratory scale reactor is carried out using numerical continuation techniques, which relies on the continuation of the loci of four types of special points in two parameters.
Journal ArticleDOI

The dynamic behavior of continuous polymerization reactors—VI. Complex dynamics in full-scale reactors

TL;DR: In this article, the model is modified slightly to represent the behavior of full-scale industrial reactors and complex structures such as multiple stable periodic orbits, isolas of periodic solutions, nonhomogeneous periodic oscillations and cascading period doublings leading to chaos are analyzed in detail.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduce differential equations and dynamical systems, including hyperbolic sets, Sympolic Dynamics, and Strange Attractors, and global bifurcations.

A Reflection on Nonlinear Oscillations, Dynamical Systems, and Bifurcations of Vector Fields

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduce differential equations and dynamical systems, including hyperbolic sets, Sympolic Dynamics, and Strange Attractors, and global bifurcations.

Quantitative universality for a class of nonlinear transformations

TL;DR: In this article, a large class of recursion relations xn+l = Af(xn) exhibiting infinite bifurcation is shown to possess a rich quantitative structure essentially independent of the recursion function.
Journal ArticleDOI

The universal metric properties of nonlinear transformations

TL;DR: In this paper, the role of functional equations to describe the exact local structure of highly bifurcated attractors is formally developed, and a hierarchy of universal functions, each descriptive of the same local structure but at levels of a cluster of 2>>\s points, is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

On the dynamic behavior of continuous stirred tank reactors

TL;DR: In this article, the types of dynamic behavior possible for a single first order reaction carried out in a stirred tank reaction are classified according to values of the parameters and plots in parameter space used to define the various possibilites.
