TLDR
The authors examined the effects of competition on intrinsic motivation and found that subjects in the competition condition displayed less subsequent intrinsic motivation than did mastery-oriented subjects. But their results corroborate predictions based on cognitive evaluation theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985) that competition can have deleterious consequences on intrinsic motivations.Abstract:
This study examined the effects of competition on intrinsic motivation. Subjects (N = 23) were randomly assigned to conditions of competition or intrinsic-mastery orientation. In the competition condition, subjects were instructed to perform an interesting activity with the explicit goal of “beating” other participants. In the intrinsic-mastery orientation condition, subjects were told to do as well as they could while looking for novel ways to perform the activity. Results showed that subjects in the competition condition displayed less subsequent intrinsic motivation than did mastery-oriented subjects. The present findings corroborate predictions based on cognitive evaluation theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985) that competition can have deleterious consequences on intrinsic motivation.read more

TL;DR: The Hierarchical model provides a framework to organize the literature on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, as well as to identify the psychological mechanisms underlying motivational changes, and to lead to novel and testable hypotheses.

Self-determination theory.
TL;DR: Self-Determination Theory as discussed by the authors is a macro-theory that details the origins and outcomes of human agentic action, and the relationship of need satisfaction to intrinsic motivation and the regulation of extrinsic motivation.

Assessing the effects of gamification in the classroom
Michael D. Hanus,Jesse Fox +1 more
TL;DR: It was found that students in the gamified course showed less motivation, satisfaction, and empowerment over time than those in the non-gamified class, and some care should be taken when applying certain gamification mechanics to educational settings.

An integrative analysis of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in sport.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a motivational sequence that integrates much of the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation literature in sport and found that the motivational impact of social factors inherent in sport, such as competition/cooperation, success/failure, and coaches' behaviors toward athletes, takes place through their influence on athletes' perceptions of autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

Effects of Externally Mediated Rewards on Intrinsic Motivation.
TL;DR: Vroom et al. as mentioned in this paper investigated the effects of external rewards on intrinsic motivation to perform an activity and found that when money was used as an external reward, intrinsic motivation tended to decrease, whereas when verbal reinforcement and positive feedback were used to increase.

Undermining children's intrinsic interest with extrinsic reward: A test of the "overjustification" hypothesis.
TL;DR: In this article, a field experiment was conducted with children to test the "overjustification" hypothesis suggested by self-percepti on theory, the proposition that a person's intrinsic interest in an activity may be decreased by inducing him to engage in that activity as an explicit means to some extrinsic goal.

TL;DR: The chapter presents the performance-contingent rewards that actually enhance intrinsic motivation when administered in a way that places emphasis on effective performance rather than on reward acquisition.
