Journal ArticleDOI

Children's health and the environment: public health issues and challenges for risk assessment.

TL;DR: The adequate protection of children against toxic agents in the environment will require fundamental and far-reaching revisions of current approaches to toxicity testing and risk assessment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Neural Development, Cell-Cell Signaling, and the “Two-Hit” Hypothesis of Schizophrenia

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a two-hit hypothesis for the development of schizophrenia, where genetic or environmental factors disrupt early central nervous system (CNS) development and then lead to the onset of schizophrenia symptoms.
Journal ArticleDOI

Teratology of retinoids.

TL;DR: An overview of the principles of teratology as they apply to retinoid-induced malformations are given and relevant aspects of the biochemical pathway and signal transduction of retinoids are described.

Principles for evaluating health risks in children associated with exposure to chemicals

TL;DR: First drafts prepared by Dr Germaine Buck Louis, Bethesda, USA; Dr Terri Damstra, Research Triangle Park, USA and Dr Ulrike Luderer, Irvine, USA.

Periconceptional vitamin a use: How much is teratogenic?

TL;DR: Blood levels of retinoids from women taking 30,000 IU/d of preformed vitamin A are not greater than retinoid blood levels in pregnant women during the first trimester who delivered healthy babies, indicating that women living in industrialized countries or who otherwise have nutritionally adequate diets may not need to ingest more than the Recommended Dietary Allowance of pre formed vitamin A as supplements.

Retinoic Acid Embryopathy

TL;DR: It is possible that a major mechanism of isotretinoin teratogenesis is a deleterious effect on cephalic neural-crest cell activity that results in the observed craniofacial, cardiac, and thymic malformations.
Book ChapterDOI

Principles of Behavioral Teratology

TL;DR: In this paper, the principles of behavioral teratogenic response were defined as an extension of Wilson's concepts, which were most recently presented in 1977 (Wilson, 1977) and defined as a set of principles and mechanisms of teratogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI

The relationship of gestational age to vitamin A induced postnatal dysfunction

TL;DR: In an effort to determine the relationship between time of administration and consequent behavioral effects on progeny, a uniform subteratogenic dose of vitamin A was administered to gravid Sprague-Dawley rats during one of five periods of gestation.
