Abstract
The pressure gradient force error of the spectral technique used in combination with the σ vertical coordinate was examined in an idealized case of an atmosphere at rest and in hydrostatic equilibrium. Small-scale (one-point and three-point) mountains were used in the tests. With such definitions of topography, difficulties could be expected with the spectral method due to slow convergence of the Fourier series. For reference, the finite-difference pressure gradient force errors were also computed. In the examples considered, it. was found that the errors of the spectral method can be large. In the rms sense, the spectral pressure gradient force errors were larger than those of the finite-difference method.

A new terrain-following vertical coordinate formulation for atmospheric prediction models

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a new smooth level vertical (SLEVE) coordinate for atmospheric prediction, which employs a scale-dependent vertical decay of underlying terrain features, such that small-scale topographic variations decay much faster with height than their large-scale counterparts.

A Modified Dynamic Framework for the Atmospheric Spectral Model and Its Application

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a dynamic framework for an atmospheric general circulation spectral model in which a reference stratified atmospheric temperature and a reference surface pressure are introduced into the governing equations so as to improve the calculation of the pressure gradient force and gradients of surface pressure and temperature.

Crossing multiple gray zones in the transition from mesoscale to microscale simulation over complex terrain

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of mesoscale to microscale modeling over complex terrain as it traverses multiple so-called gray zones is presented, where the focus is on horizontal grid resolutions from ∼10 km to ∼10 m.
