π−-Beam Studies Using Time-of-Flight Methods

TLDR
Physical properties of the SIN pion beam πE3 have been measured using time-of-flight techniques and in particular the momentum and the momentum band width were determined with an accuracy of ± 0.5 MeV/c.
Abstract
Physical properties of the SIN pion beam πE3 have been measured using time-of-flight techniques. In particular the momentum and the momentum band width were determined with an accuracy of ± 0.5 MeV/c and ± 0.1 MeV/c, respectively. The beam contamination with e− and μ− as well as their local distributions have been measured under various conditions.

Energy deposition spectra of negative pions and their application to radiation therapy.

TL;DR: Investigation of the influence of peak width on radiation quality revealed a dilution of the high-LET dose fraction for broader peaks, as expected between dose peak and plateau for “narrow” pion beams.

Different genetic and cellular responses to negative pimesons (peak and plateau) in dependence on intrinsic properties of reaction systems: a new concept of RBE.

TL;DR: The existence of some RBE values for peak pions under 1 have suggested a new concept of high LET action namely the two system theory which gives more importance to the intrinsic properties of the irradiated biological systems.

Effect of negative pi mesons on vascular permeability of brain in neonatal rats.

TL;DR: Neonatal rats and their radiation-induced cerebral petechial hemorrhages were used as an experimental system for evaluating the effects of negative pions on healthy tissue and especially on the microvasculature and implications were made as to the importance of this favorable peak/plateau relationship.

Pre-clinical studies of the negative pi-meson beam at TRIUMF.

TL;DR: The inactivation of cultured CHO cells by an extended-peakπ− dose distribution has been measured using the gel technique, and the survival data have been fitted by a model which characterizes the physical quality of the dose profile by means of measured star densities.

RBE and OER values of negative pion beams from growth inhibition of Vicia Faba roots

TL;DR: It has been found that the RBE value increases with the fractional “star dose” up to a maximum after which the R BE decreases, and the OER values, however, were found to decrease with increas ing “ star dose’s” fraction rather rapidly after which it was found to be independent of the “stars” contribution.

A novel time-of-flight method and its applications in nuclear reaction studies

TL;DR: In this paper, a time-of-flight method designed for accelerators with high particle burst rates is described, which uses an independent energy measurement to resolve the ambiguity which arises when the primary pulse separation, length of flight path and energy range are outside the limits of conventional time-ofthe-flight technique.

New investigations into the detection properties of hybrid chambers

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of mechanical and electric parameters upon the time resolution, the useful trigger delay and the maximum detection efficiency of hybrid chambers is described, and studies of these detection characteristics as a function of various gas fillings and quenching gas fractions are reported.
