Performance tradeoffs between diversity schemes in wireless systems

TLDR
A comparative study of various diversity schemes with and without feedback is presented and the weight vector for equal gain transmission (EGT) is modified using quantized feedback of the channel state information (CSI) so that a close optimal performance can be obtained with less feedback.
Abstract
Multiple antennas at the transmitter side and/or at the receiver side can improve the capacity and/or quality of reception in a fading environment. In this paper, a comparative study of various diversity schemes with and without feedback is presented. Simulation results show that maximal ratio combining (MRC) and transmit beamforming provide maximum performance. The other focus of this paper is to modify the weight vector for equal gain transmission (EGT) using quantized feedback of the channel state information (CSI) so that a close optimal performance can be obtained with less feedback. Simulation results show that three bits is sufficient to achieve this performance.

Maximum ratio transmission

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the concept, principles and analysis of maximum ratio transmission for wireless communications, where multiple antennas are used for both transmission and reception, and show that the average overall signal-to-mise ratio (SNR) is proportional to the cross correlation between channel vectors and that error probability decreases inversely with the (L/spl times/K)th power of the average SNR.

Equal gain transmission in multiple-input multiple-output wireless systems

TL;DR: The paper proposes equal gain transmission (EGT) to provide diversity advantage in MIMO systems experiencing Rayleigh fading and an algorithm to construct a beamforming vector codebook that guarantees full diversity order.
