The authors compared the Likert approach with the phrase completion approach to measure attitudes that fall at all points along the underlying attitudinal continuum, and found that items constructed in the phrase-completion format may yield higher validity and reliability relative to LIKert constructed items.
Abstract
Valid and reliable measures are fundamental to advancing social science. Phrase completion scales were designed to provide enhanced psychometrics compared to Likert scales by more closely conforming to foundational measurement and statistical assumptions. This article tests the two approaches by examining responses (N = 134) to items formatted using the Likert approach with comparable items formatted using the phrase completion approach. An assessment of the written comments, Cronbach's alphas, inter-item correlations, factor scores, and SEM coefficients suggested that items constructed in the phrase completion format may yield higher validity and reliability relative to Likert constructed items. The advantages of phrase completion scales may be particularly pronounced when measuring attitudes that fall at all points along the underlying attitudinal continuum.

Can Likert Scales be Treated as Interval Scales?—A Simulation Study

TL;DR: The Likert scale is widely used in social work research, and is commonly constructed with four to seven points as mentioned in this paper, which is usually treated as an interval scale, but strictly speaking it is an ordinal scale.

Feeling of certainty: Uncovering a missing link between knowledge and acceptance of evolution

TL;DR: In this paper, a new model of the factors influencing acceptance of evolutionary theory is proposed, which highlights a novel variable unexplored in previous studies: the feeling of certainty (FOC), grounded in an emerging understanding of brain function that acknowledges the contributions of intuitive cognitions in making decisions, such as whether or not to accept a particular theoretical explanation of events.

Administrative Coordination in Non-Profit Human Service Delivery Networks: The Role of Competition and Trust.

TL;DR: Results suggest that as competing non-profit leaders build trust, the more their agencies coordinate their administrative functions, which supports the hypothesis that trustworthiness moderates the influence of competition on administrative coordination.

Single-Item Measures for Subjective Academic Performance, Self-Esteem, and Socioeconomic Status

TL;DR: In this paper, single-item measures, which are easy and simple in administration, were found to be useful in areas such as health and business, but they were not popular in measuring important constructs in...

Personal religious orientation and prejudice.

TL;DR: With the aid of a scale to measure extrinsic and intrinsic orientation this research confirmed previous findings and added a 4th: people who are indiscriminately proreligious are the most prejudiced of all.
