Forested landscapes are dynamic - they are always in transition and have always been in a state of constant change. Though the rates and agents of change vary temporally and spatially, change underlies the natural state of the world's forests. Land-use patterns and disturbance regimes are two of the dynamic agents that can have profound effects on the abundance, dis­ tribution and diversity of terrestrial vertebrates (Burgess and Sharpe, 1981; Saunders et al., 1987; Wilson 1988). The need for conservation and man­ agement of forest and wildlife resources requires humans to influence the uses of land and the sizes and distributions of wildlife populations to maintain specific habitat conditions. Identification of the primary agents of change and their extent and magnitude are necessary to maintain forested ecosystems and their faunal components. An understanding of the back­ ground rates and causes of change in forested landscapes can help to guide conservation efforts on many scales. In this first chapter we synthesize information about forested landscapes in New England. This information, gathered from historical records, is used to demonstrate the continuing patterns of change influencing conditions for the region's forest fauna. Many studies are being conducted today that utilize new technologies that can be used to monitor forest habitats in New England (Miller and Griffin, 1994) and around the globe (Kattan et al.,1994). New research indicates an ice-free corridor may have been open for 20,000 years in North America and people could have moved southward even at Last Glacial Maximum. Isolation in America led to an adaptive radiation. A formal taxonomic review defines the early Paleoindian groups as Otomid-Sundadonts and compares conventional paleontological methodology with methods used in physical anthropology. A sinkhole locality in the Wasatch Plateau has yielded Utah's first record of the American mastodon. At nearly 3,000 m this fossil-bearing site denotes the highest elevation yet reported for Mammut americanum, and demonstrates that mountainous terrain was not a barrier to dispersals. A presumably preferred habitat of spruce-fir open forests, similar to that in the area today, was present during the time of the mastodons reported here. Two incomplete individuals of M. americanum are the only fossils that were found in the sinkhole. Entrapment appears to have been the cause of death. Since the record of M. americanum in western North America is sparse, the present find has added significance in providing more information about the nature of this animal. A possible association of a recovered spear point fragment near the fossils indicates the possibility that man and mastodon were contemporaneous here. Three independent datings were run on mastodon bone. Two based on carbon-14 yielded dates of 7,090 + 200 yr B.P. and 7,590 ? 100 yr B.P., while the third, using the racemization process, indicated an age of less than 10,000 yr B.P.
