TLDR
The leaf epidermis contains a layer of tanniniferous cells with thick walls absent in the other closely similar species of Polygonum, and is characterized by its coriaceous leaves.
Abstract
Polygonum khajeh-jamali Khosravi & Poormahdi sp. nova (Polygonaceae) is described and illustrated from SW Iran. It can be assigned to Spinescentia group of sect. Molecular phylogeny of Atraphaxis and the woody Polygonum species (Polygonaceae): taxonomic implications based on molecular and morphological evidence

TL;DR: The phylogenetic results revealed that several woody Polygonum species endemic to Iran formed a distinct clade, and are nested within Atraphaxis, which was the first diverging lineage as sister to an assemblage of these taxa and the bulk of Atraph axis species.
Journal ArticleDOI

What is Atraphaxis L. (Polygonaceae, Polygoneae): cryptic taxa and resolved taxonomic complexity instead of the formal lumping and the lack of morphological synapomorphies.

TL;DR: The genera Atraphaxis and Polygonum were found to be widely polyphyletic and the genus Bactria, which circumscribes two species, is newly established as a result of this analyses.

A revision of polygonum l. sensu lato (polygonaceae) in iran

TL;DR: The genus Polygonum L. A. sensu lato which has been collected from Fars province is described as a new species from Iran and Persicaria salicifolia which has was collected from Khuzestan province is reported as anew species record from Iran.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Taxonomic Revision of Genus Polygonum L. sensu lato (Polygonaceae) for Flora of Iran

TL;DR: A brief revision of this genus in Iran is presented and the number of species for Polygonum L. sensu lato has been reduced to 25 species.

Leaf anatomical studies of the annual species of Polygonum s.l. (Polygonaceae) in Iran

TL;DR: In Iran, Polygonum s.l. (Polygonaceae) comprises 13 annual species with a complex taxonomic situation and great morphological similarities between some of the species.

Foliar anatomy of Polygonum (Polygonaceae) : survey of epidermal and selected internal structures

TL;DR: Several anatomical characters in leaves were described, and their distribution determined, for 153 species of Polygonum, mostly from herbarium specimens, and unique epidermal and subepidermal cavities seem to be unknown elsewhere.

Comparative leaf structure of aquatic polygonum species

TL;DR: It is now possible to distinguish American Polygonum species by leaf characters alone and to discourage the theory that it is an abortive structure produced by a hybrid between glandular and non-glandular species.
