Prevalence of Candida spp. in cervical-vaginal samples and the in vitro susceptibility of isolates.

TLDR
The high rate of resistance to triazoles observed in the study suggests the necessity of the association of laboratory exams to clinical diagnosis to minimize the practice of empirical treatments that can contribute to the development of resistance in the isolates.

Global burden of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis: a systematic review

TL;DR: Estimates of annual global prevalence, estimated lifetime incidence and economic loss due to recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis, and predicted the number of women at risk to 2030 are generated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Candida albicans - Biology, molecular characterization, pathogenicity, and advances in diagnosis and control - An update.

TL;DR: The present review highlights the etiology, epidemiology, molecular typing, commensalism and virulence factors, along with the appropriate prevention and control strategies regarding this widespread pathogen.

Biofilms and vulvovaginal candidiasis

TL;DR: This review of Candida species with a special emphasis on Candida albicans discusses specific areas such as biofilm structure and development, cell morphology and biofilm formation, biofilm-associated gene expression, the cell surface and adherence, the extracellular matrix, bio film metabolism, and bio film drug resistance in vulvovaginitis biofilms as an important virulence factor in fungi.
Journal ArticleDOI

Recent advances on topical antimicrobials for skin and soft tissue infections and their safety concerns.

TL;DR: Topical antimicrobials retain the following features: they are able to escape the enzymatic degradation and rapid clearance in the gastrointestinal tract or the first-pass metabolism during oral administration, resulting in a reduction of microbial proliferation at infected skin sites.

Antifungal Susceptibilities of Candida Species Causing Vulvovaginitis and Epidemiology of Recurrent Cases

TL;DR: The results support the use of azoles for empirical therapy of uncomplicated candidal vulvovaginitis and suggest recurrent episodes are more often caused by non-albicans species, for which azole agents are less likely to be effective.

Antifungal Activity of Brazilian Propolis Microparticles against Yeasts Isolated from Vulvovaginal Candidiasis

TL;DR: Evaluated in vitro antifungal activity of propolis ethanol extract and propolis microparticles obtained from a sample of Brazilian propolis against clinical yeast isolates of importance in the vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) provided important information for the potential application of PMs in the therapy of VVC and the possible prevention of the occurrence of new symptomatic episodes.
