Abstract
A total of 43 polymers containing only C, H, and O have been studied using an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy instrument capable of the highest energy resolution avallable to date. The primary alm was to reinvestigate the C1s binding energy shifts for oxygen functionalltles and to systematically investigate secondary (β) shifts for the first time. In addition, this large data set has revealed the effects of vibrational fine structure on C1s component line width/shape and the effects of shake-up/shake-off (in photoemission from C=O groups) on nonstoichoimetry of C1s component intensities

Graphene: Corrosion-Inhibiting Coating

TL;DR: Graphene is established as the thinnest known corrosion-protecting coating because it suppresses metal oxidation and oxygen reduction and prevents corrosion of underlying metals.

Controllable Surface Modification of Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) by Hydrolysis or Aminolysis I: Physical, Chemical, and Theoretical Aspects

TL;DR: Two wet-chemical methods are described to introduce useful levels of carboxylic acid or primary and secondary amine groups, respectively, onto the surface of PLGA with minimal degradation and it is shown that these carboxyl and amines are readily activated to allow the covalent attachment of biological macromolecules.

XPS Studies of Fluorinated Acrylate Polymers and Block Copolymers with Polystyrene

TL;DR: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been used to investigate the surface characteristics of various fluorinated acrylate homopolymers [1, 1-dihydroperfluorooctyl acrylated (PFOA), 1, 1 -di... as mentioned in this paper.

Strong resistance of citrate anions on metal nanoparticles to desorption under thiol functionalization

TL;DR: A detailed citrate/thiolate coadsorption model is presented that describes this final mixed surface composition of AuNPs, and shows hydrogen bonding between carboxyl moieties primarily is attributed to the strong adsorption of citrate, leading to the formation of a stabilized network that is challenging to displace.

Charging of ionic liquid surfaces under X-ray irradiation: the measurement of absolute binding energies by XPS

TL;DR: The nature and extent of surface charging in ionic liquids is demonstrated and the use of long alkyl chains and the imidazolium nitrogen, both of which are part of the ionic liquid chemical structure, as internal references for charge correction are investigated.
