Primary malignant melanoma of the oral cavity. A review of 177 cases
TLDR
The authors report six new cases of melanoma of the oral cavity and review 171 cases published since the last major review in 1975, including the classification of oral melanomas with radial growth phases.Abstract:
Malignant melanoma of the oral cavity is rare, accounting for about 1% to 8% of all melanomas. There have been no prospective studies of melanoma in this location, and all previous papers have reported small numbers of cases or have retrospectively reviewed case reports from the literature. The authors report six new cases and review 171 cases published since the last major review in 1975. The classification of oral melanomas with radial growth phases is discussed.read more

TL;DR: In the not too distant future, innovative retroviral transfection, antibodies against specific melanoma-associated factors, vaccination against melanoma, and gene therapy to repair cytogenetic abnormalities and tumor suppressor gene mutations may provide effective therapy and protection against melanomas.

Primary mucosal melanoma
TL;DR: Primary mucosal melanomas are rare, biologically aggressive neoplasms and most afflicted individuals harbor micrometastatic disease and experience a course characterized by multiple local recurrences before the clinical development of distant disease.

TL;DR: Sinonasal mucosal melanoma is a rare disease associated with a very poor prognosis and prognostic factors and outcomes with recent treatment modalities are sought.

The Histogenesis and Biologic Behavior of Primary Human Malignant Melanomas of the Skin
TL;DR: Evidence is presented suggesting that superficial spreading melanoma and lentigo maligna melanoma (Hutchinson9s melanotic freckle) show a long period of superficial growth, followed by the relatively rapid appearance of nodules or deeper invasion within the primary lesion.

Tumor thickness, level of invasion and node dissection in stage I cutaneous melanoma.
TL;DR: It was found that tumor thickness is a better measure of prognosis than is the level of invasion of the tumor, and the chance of developing recurrent disease appears to be directly proportional to tumor thickness.

Ganglion cell populations in normal and pathological human cochleae. Implications for cochlear implantation.
TL;DR: The ganglion cell populations were largest in ears deafened by sudden deafness, Meniere's Disease, and ototoxic drugs; they were somewhat less for those with vascular occlusion, temporal bone fracture, otosclerosis, and cochlear dysplasias; and they were least in those with measles, bacterial labyrinthitis and congenital syphilis.

The developmental biology of primary human malignant melanomas.
TL;DR: The developmental biology of a primary neoplasm is illustrated by discussing and illustrating the evolution of these three dominant forms of melanoma: malignant melanoma of the superficial-spreading type, the lentigo-maligna type, and the nodular type.
Journal ArticleDOI
The classification of melanoma and its relationship with prognosis
TL;DR: Melanoma arising in nodular form is the most malignant and that arising in Hutchinson's melanotic freckle is the least malignant.
