Grain boundary separation in transgranular cleavage cracking

TL;DR: In this paper, the energy balance associated with the transmission of cleavage front across high angle grain boundary is analyzed theoretically, and the most energetically favorable crack front transmission mode can be reached through a self-adjusting process.

Rectangular Strain-Rosette Method for Measuring the Mode I Stress-Intensity Factor KI and T-stress

TL;DR: In this paper, a new experimental technique for measuring stress intensity factor (SIF) and T-stress under mode I loading is developed, which exploits the optimal positioning of a rectangular strain gage rosette near a crack tip in mode I.

The importance of being cross-linked for the bacterial cell wall

TL;DR: The reinforcing effect of MreB on the cell wall is studied and it is concluded that the cross-linked structure of thecell wall plays the more important role in safeguarding against mechanical failure due to cracking.
