Principles of laboratory assessment of drug abuse liability and implications for clinical development.

TLDR
The current "gold standard" methodologies that are used for laboratory assessments of abuse liability in non-human and human subjects are described and particular emphasis is given to procedures such as non- human drug discrimination, self-administration, and physical dependence testing, and human dose-effect abuse liability studies that are commonly used in regulatory submissions to governmental agencies.

Waterpipe tobacco smoking and cigarette smoking: a direct comparison of toxicant exposure and subjective effects.

TL;DR: The findings are consistent with the conclusion that waterpipe tobacco smoking presents substantial risk of dependence, disease, and death, and they can be incorporated into prevention interventions that might help deter more adolescents and young adults from experimenting with an almost certainly lethal method of tobacco use.

Serotonin 5-HT2 Receptor Interactions with Dopamine Function: Implications for Therapeutics in Cocaine Use Disorder

TL;DR: The present review will focus on the role of serotonin (5-HT; 5-hydroxytryptamine) neurotransmission in the neuropharmacology of cocaine and related abused stimulants and proposes new approaches to guide targeted development of serotonergic ligands for the treatment of cocaine use disorder.

Intracranial Self-Stimulation to Evaluate Abuse Potential of Drugs

TL;DR: Strengths of ICSS in comparison with drug self-administration include potential for simultaneous evaluation of both abuse-related and abuse-limiting effects, flexibility for use with various routes of drug administration or drug vehicles, utility for studies in drug-naive subjects as well as in subjects with controlled levels of prior drug exposure, and utility for Studies of drug time course.

The predictive validity of the rat self-administration model for abuse liability.

TL;DR: This review of 71 drugs identifies high concordance between findings from rat self-administration studies and two clinical indicators of abuse liability, namely reports of positive subjective-effects and the DEA drug scheduling status.

Conditioned place preference: What does it add to our preclinical understanding of drug reward?

TL;DR: A theoretical overview of some critical issues relevant to conditioned place preference is provided and it seems clear that CPP measures a learning process that is fundamentally distinct from drug self-administration.

Physiologic, subjective, and behavioral effects of amphetamine, methamphetamine, ephedrine, phenmetrazine, and methylphenidate in man

TL;DR: This study suggests that it is unlikely that these central actions in man are a consequence of the release of norepinephrine in the brain, and suggests that these five agents share a common mode of central action.

Experimental Morphine Addiction: Method for Automatic Intravenous Injections in Unrestrained Rats

James R. Weeks
- 12 Oct 1962 -
TL;DR: An operant behavioral study on morphine addiction utilized a self-injection technique for giving intravenous injections to relatively unrestrained rats, finding that Morphine was a reinforcer that produced almost immediate satiation.
