TLDR
The data support the hypothesis that uncomplicated coronary atheromas may regress in primates in appropriate dietary settings.Abstract:
Rhesus monkeys subjected to the atherogenic stimulus of a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet showed significant coronary atheromatosis at the end of 17 months. Smaller fibrotic lesions with scant stainable lipid were found in animals that were subsequently fed either of two cholesterol-free diets for 40 months. The average cross-sectional area of the lumen was more than 80% greater in regression animals than in monkeys with baseline atherosclerosis. The data support the hypothesis that uncomplicated coronary atheromas may regress in primates in appropriate dietary settings.read more

Antiatherothrombotic Properties of Statins Implications for Cardiovascular Event Reduction
TL;DR: Experimental animal models suggest that statins may foster stability through a reduction in macrophages and cholesterol ester content and an increase in volume of collagen and smooth muscle cells, which help to explain the early and significant cardiovascular event reduction reported in several clinical trials of statin therapy.

Homocystine-induced arteriosclerosis. The role of endothelial cell injury and platelet response in its genesis.
TL;DR: It is concluded that homocystine-induced endothelial cell injury resulted in arteriosclerosis through platelet-mediated intimal proliferation of smooth muscle cells that can be prevented by drug-induced platelet dysfunction.

TL;DR: Reduction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels can induce regression of atherosclerotic lesions of the coronary arteries in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia, and the anticipation of benefit from treatment applies to women and men alike.

Coronary heart disease risk factors in school children: the Muscatine study.
TL;DR: The frequency of coronary risk factors was documented in 4,829 school children in Muscatine, Iowa, over a 14-month period of time, indicating that a considerable number of school-age children have risk factors which in adults are predictive of coronary heart disease.
