TLDR
Modelling the relationship between the concentration of magnesium in serum and the concentrations of total protein, albumin, and globulin in serum suggests that 25% of the total serum magnesium is bound to albumin and 8% to globulins.Abstract:
We determined concentrations of magnesium, total protein, albumin, and globulin in more than 74 000 serum specimens from patients and noted a direct linear relationship between the concentration of magnesium in serum and the concentrations of total protein, albumin, and globulin in serum. Albumin and magnesium concentrations are linearly related at high and low albumin concentrations; within the reference interval, however, the magnesium concentration is independent of the albumin concentration. Linear regression analysis suggests that 25% of the total serum magnesium is bound to albumin and 8% to globulins.read more

Magnesium Metabolism and its Disorders
TL;DR: Chronic low magnesium state has been associated with a number of chronic diseases including diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and osteoporosis and the use of magnesium as a therapeutic agent in asthma, myocardial infarction, and pre-eclampsia is also discussed.

Magnesium metabolism in health and disease
TL;DR: There is no readily available test to determine intracellular/total body magnesium status and the clinical laboratory evaluation of magnesium status is primarily limited to the serum magnesium concentration, 24-hour urinary excretion, and percent retention following parenteral magnesium.

Magnesium : the fifth but forgotten electrolyte
TL;DR: Clinical laboratory evaluation of Mg status is limited primarily to the total serum Mg concentration and a 24-hour urinary excretion, and instrumentation to determine ionized Mg in serum (ion-selective electrode) and in soft tissue (nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) should be available in the near future.

Diabetes mellitus and electrolyte disorders
TL;DR: An overview of the electrolyte disturbances occurring in DM is provided and the underlying mechanisms are described, paving the way for pathophysiology-directed therapy, thus contributing to the avoidance of the several deleterious effects associated with electrolyte disorders and their treatment.
