Abstract
Analyses of Doppler lidar data reveal sea breezes occurring on two different depth and time scales at Monterey Bay, California, on a day with offshore gradient flow indicated before sunrise and after sunset. The lidar data used in this study consist of vertical cross sections and profiles of the westerly, onshore wind component u. In the morning after 0900 PST a shallow sea breeze formed, which reached a depth of 300 m by noon. Starting in early afternoon a deeper sea-breeze layer formed in the lowest kilometer, and by late afternoon the shallow sea breeze blended into the deeper sea breeze and was no longer evident. Maximum speeds of 6 m s−1 in the shallow sea breeze occurred at the surface, whereas those in the deep sea breeze (also 6 m s−1) were about 300 m above the surface. It is hypothesized that the shallow sea breeze is a local phenomenon responding to a more local temperature contrast between the sea and the region between the ocean and the mountain ranges. The deeper sea breeze, on the ...

High-Resolution Doppler Lidar for Boundary Layer and Cloud Research

TL;DR: The high-resolution Doppler lidar (HRDL) was developed to provide higher spatial, temporal, and velocity resolution and more reliable performance than was previously obtainable with CO2-laser-based technology as discussed by the authors.

Impact of sea-breeze activity on nearshore and foreshore processes in southwestern Australia

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the effects of a typical summer sea-breeze cycle on nearshore hydrodynamics and morphology, and found that the nearshore environment responds rapidly to an increase in wind speed (up to 12 m s −1 ) during the sea breeze.

Impact of the Rhone and Durance valleys on sea-breeze Circulation in the Marseille Area

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the role of thermal circulations on pollutant transport and ventilation in the sea-breeze channelling by the broad Rhone valley and the narrow Durance valley.

A method for finding sea breeze days under stable synoptic conditions and its application to the Swedish west coast

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for selecting sea breeze days in an archipelago was developed with special application to the West Coast of Sweden, where the primary criterion for identifying a sea breeze was the occurrence of a distinct change in surface wind direction within a 24-hour period.

Nocturnal cleansing flows in a tributary valley

TL;DR: In this article, LiDAR scan data showed that the flows were highly complex, that the relatively clean flow was confined to the lower levels (lowest ∼ 500 m) of the valley, and that regions of strongest outflow were also the regions of cleanest air.
