Abstract
The problem of searching the set of keys in a file to find a key which is closest to a given query key is discussed. After “closest,” in terms of a metric on the the key space, is suitably defined, three file structures are presented together with their corresponding search algorithms, which are intended to reduce the number of comparisons required to achieve the desired result. These methods are derived using certain inequalities satisfied by metrics and by graph-theoretic concepts. Some empirical results are presented which compare the efficiency of the methods.

Metric Indexes for Approximate String Matching in a Dictionary

TL;DR: This work considers the problem of finding all approximate occurrences of a given string q, with at most k differences, in a finite database or dictionary of strings, and considers the “triangular inequality”, the most important property in this case.

Time-Aware Similarity Search: A Metric-Temporal Representation for Complex Data

TL;DR: A novel metric-temporal data representation is proposed and its properties are exploited to compare elements by similarity taking into account time-related evolution, and the experiments showed that the temporal information always improves the precision of the answer.

The Asymmetric Approximate Anytime Join: A New Primitive with Applications to Data Mining.

TL;DR: It is argued that for many applications, an exact solution to the problem is not required, and it is shown that by framing the problem as an anytime algorithm the authors can extract most of the benefit of a join in a small fraction of the time taken by the full algorithm.
