Abstract
A rapid procedure has been developed in which an anion-exchange resin and spectrophotofluorometry are used to determine total porphyrins in urine. After porphyrins are eluted from the resin with 3N HCl, their fluorescence at 646 nm is measured with an Aminco-Bowman Spectrophotofluorometer. About 10 min are required per analysis by a skilled technician. Added to urine specimens, 95.3 ± 4.9% of uroporphyrin and 94.7 ± 9.6% of coproporphyrin, were accounted for. Eighteen normal urine samples contained an average of 0.063 µmol of porphyrin per liter (range, 0.028-0.176 µmol/liter). The coefficient of variation, 2.9%, indicates the precision to be very satisfactory.

2,3-Dimercaptosuccinic acid as an antidote for lead intoxication.

TL;DR: Dimercaptosuccinic acid appears promising and may greatly simplify the treatment of lead intoxication, with clinical symptoms and biochemical indices of lead toxicity improved.

Liquid-chromatographic analysis for urinary porphyrins.

TL;DR: Urinary porphyrins are separated, according to number of carboxyl groups, in a system consisting of a mu-Bondapak C18 stationary phase and a mobile phase of methanol and aqueous sodium phosphate in a linear gradient.

Second derivative-high-performance liquid chromatographic-fluorometric detection of porphyrins in chick embryo liver cell culture medium.

TL;DR: The most effective method for preparation of the porphyrin methyl esters prior to chromatography was found to be lyophilization of the culture medium prior to esterification with 5% sulphuric acid in methanol.

Symptoms and clinical abnormalities following ingestion of polybrominated-biphenyl-contaminated food products.

TL;DR: ’ Unfortunately, before the cause and dimensions of the problem were fully appreciated, contamination of milk, beef, pork, eggs and poultry occurred, and ingestion of these foodstuffs resulted in PBB absorption by those who ate these products.
