Abstract
The history of the development of the subject is first outlined, and methods of operation of cables are described. The technical side is introduced with a statement of the various conditions whi h limit operation of cables, and a general method of analysis is developed, based upon an extension of ordinary alternating-current theory. The theory is made use of to analyze the action of cable types and of apparatus which at this time can be regarded as standard. The fundamental theory of the method of analysis, with information on the calculation of transients in electrical circuits, is given in the Appendix.

Certain Topics in Telegraph Transmission Theory

TL;DR: A considerable portion of the paper describes and illustrates a method for expressing the criteria of distortionless transmission in terms of the steady-state characteristics of the system, and of the minimum frequency range required for transmission at a given speed of signaling.

Bibliography on the surge performance of transformers and rotating machines

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present references to significant literature referring to the surge performance of transformer windings and rotating machines, from the beginning of the art to 1957 inclusive, and a total of 934 references are given, which are distributed chronologically.

Industrial research at the Eastern Telegraph Company, 1872–1929

TL;DR: It is argued that the attitude of the cable industry towards research and development was less conservative and altogether more complex than historians have suggested and that this was not inappropriate for a service-sector firm.

The Newfoundland-Azores High-Speed Duplex Cable

TL;DR: In this article, a description of the cable laid by the Western Union Telegraph Company in 1928 between Newfoundland and the Azores is given, which is unique in that it consists of a combination of non-loaded and loaded cable, the latter being tapered throughout certain portions.

Transmission characteristics of the submarine cable

TL;DR: In this paper, the adjustment of organisms in accordance with this principle is very similar to the adjustment by organisms to directed light (heliotropism) and to gravity (geotropism), and a term is suggested for defining this adjustment, vis., rheotropism.
