Small-angle X-ray scattering and FTIR characterization of nanostructured poly (vinyl alcohol)/silicate hybrids for immunoassay applications

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed and characterized hybrid organic-inorganic materials based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer chemically modified by organosilanes and crosslinked network to be tested as solid support on immunoassay application.

Ionic-covalent entanglement hydrogels from gellan gum, carrageenan and an epoxy-amine

TL;DR: In this paper, a "one pot" preparation of interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels with double network characteristics is presented, where a small addition of biopolymer dramatically increases the stiffness and strength of the epoxy-amine gels without affecting the large strain at failure value.

Rupture of rubber. I. Characteristic energy for tearing

TL;DR: The resistance to tearing of a rubber vulcanizate is usually determined by loading in a specified manner a test-piece of the vulcanizer of standard shape, in which a notch has been produced, either in the molding process or by cutting the testpiece in a standard fashion.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels: reinforcement of radiation-crosslinked networks by crystallization.

TL;DR: Aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) solutions were crosslinked via electron-beam irradiation to form transparent hydrogels of varying crosslinking densities as discussed by the authors, which showed greatly improved mechanical properties (modulus, ultimate tensile strength, tear strength).

Poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels. Formation by electron beam irradiation of aqueous solutions and subsequent crystallization

TL;DR: In this article, aqueous solutions of poly(vinyl alcohol) were submitted to varying doses of electron beam irradiation and the molecular weight between crosslinks, Mc, was calculated as a function of radiation dose, initial polymer concentration, and temperature.

Threshold fracture energies for elastomers

TL;DR: Fracture energies have been measured for two types of polybutadiene elastomer, crosslinked to various extents and torn under various conditions as discussed by the authors, with threshold values ranging from 40 to 80 jm−2, for samples torn at extremely low rates of tearing, at high temperatures, and in the swollen state.
