TLDR
In this paper, a classification scheme for cancelling magnetic features according to the origins of their two halves is proposed; the observed properties of flux cancellation are summarized; the cancellation appears to be the observational evidence of magnetic reconnection taking place in or above the photospheric layer.

Small-scale solar magnetic fields: An overview

TL;DR: An overview of the observational and the theoretical methods used to investigate solar magnetic fields is given in this paper, which includes an introduction to the Stokes parameters, their radiative transfer in the presence of a magnetic field, and empirical techniques used to measure various properties of solar magnetic features.

The flare-associated magnetic changes in an active region. II : Flux emergence and cancellation

Jingxiu Wang, +1 more
- 01 Jan 1993 -
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the associations of flares to flux emergence and cancellation with the aid of complete time sequences of vector magnetograms of an active region for a 4-day period around the central meridian passage.
Journal ArticleDOI

The magnetic field in the solar atmosphere

TL;DR: The solar magnetic field couples the solar interior with the visible surface of the Sun and with its atmosphere as mentioned in this paper, and is responsible for all solar activity in its numerous manifestations, such as coronal mass ejections and flares.

The Magnetic Field in the Solar Atmosphere

TL;DR: The solar magnetic field couples the solar interior with the visible surface of the Sun and with its atmosphere as discussed by the authors, and is responsible for all solar activity in its numerous manifestations, such as coronal mass ejections and flares.

The correspondence between X-ray bright points and evolving magnetic features in the quiet sun

TL;DR: The results of a study of X-ray bright points (XBPs) and small-scale evolving magnetic structures are presented in this article, where it is suggested that most XBPs are created when converging flow brings together oppositely directed field lines.

The cancellation of magnetic flux. II - In a decaying active region

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used H-alpha filtergrams and videomagnetograms to study an active region during its period of decay on August 3-8, 1984; the decay had been initiated by a fragmentation process in which very small knots of magnetic flux separated from larger concentration of flux.

The Cancellation of Magnetic Flux. I. On the Quiet Sun

TL;DR: In this paper, the disappearance of magnetic flux in an area of the quiet Sun from digital and photographic magnetograms recorded at 2·5 min intervals for many hours on 9 July 1984 at the Big Bear Solar Observatory was studied.
