TLDR
It is suggested that the instability of the surface crust contributes significantly to inhibition of algal settlement on Phymatolithon, and the possibility of chemical inhibition cannot be ruled out.

Marine epibiosis. I. Fouling and antifouling: some basic aspects

TL;DR: Parts of the epibiosis/antifouling complex are illustrated and the omnipresence of fouling pressure, the first stages in the establishment of a fouling community, the benefits and disadvantages of epibiotic for both epiand basibionts, and possible anbfouling defense adaptations are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Food-web analysis through field measurement of per capita interaction strength

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an experimental study designed to estimate interaction strength in a species-rich herbivore guild, documenting on a per capita basis mainly weak or positive interactions, and a few strong interactions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Recognition and selection of settlement substrata determine post-settlement survival in corals

TL;DR: Rates of larval settlement, post-settlement survival, and the sensitivity of larvae to chemical extracts of CCA were all positively correlated across the five species of C CA, indicating important implications for structuring the reef ecosystem.

Broad spectrum effects of secondary metabolites from the red alga delisea pulchra in antifouling assays

TL;DR: Activity of the D. pulchra metabolites was comparable to that of the heavy metals and biocides currently used in antifouling paints, however, no single compound was most active in all tests and some meta...

Effects of benthic algae on the replenishment of corals and the implications for the resilience of coral reefs

TL;DR: There is a serious lack of information about algal effects on coral replenishment, which are likely to cause bottlenecks in coral recovery and significantly reduce the resilience of coral reefs.

Food webs : linkage, interaction strength and community infrastructure

TL;DR: It seems particularly opportune to discuss food webs and evolving views on their structure here for both their genesis and first modern treatment (Elton 1927) and much of their later development (May 1973; Pimm & Lawton 1978) has a decidedly British accent.

Plant species diversity in a marine intertidal community: importance of herbivore food preference and algal competitive abilities

TL;DR: Predators or herbivores do not simply increase or decrease species diversity of their food, but can potentially do both and the results may apply to most generalized consumers and provide a framework within which previously confusing results can be understood.

Experimental Evaluation of Ecological Dominance in a Rocky Intertidal Algal Community

TL;DR: Algal succession in deeper Portage Head tidepools was found to be relatively slow with no clear dominance expressed after 5 yr, and the rate of algal succession following removal of the dominant algal species or of Strongylocentrotus is proportional to the degree of wave exposure.
