The forestry reclamation approach
TLDR
The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) is a method for reclaiming coal-mined land to forest under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA).Abstract:
The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) is a method for reclaiming coal-mined land to forest under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA). The FRA is based on knowledge gained from both scientific research and experience (Photo 1). The FRA can achieve costeffective regulatory compliance for coal operators while creating productive forests that generate value for their owners and provide watershed protection, wildlife habitat, and other environmental services.read more

Restoring Forests and Associated Ecosystem Services on Appalachian Coal Surface Mines
Carl E. Zipper,James A. Burger,Jeff Skousen,Patrick Angel,Christopher D. Barton,V. Davis,Jennifer A. Franklin +6 more
TL;DR: Reclamation of coal mines using the FRA is expected to restore these lands’ capabilities to provide forest-based ecosystem services, such as wood production, atmospheric carbon sequestration, wildlife habitat, watershed protection, and water quality protection to a greater extent than conventional reclamation practices.

Forest restoration following surface mining disturbance: challenges and solutions
S. Ellen Macdonald,Simon M. Landhäusser,Jeff Skousen,Jennifer A. Franklin,Jan Frouz,Sarah L. Hall,Douglass F. Jacobs,Sylvie A. Quideau +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide an overview of the challenges inherent in efforts to restore mined landscapes to functioning forest ecosystems and present a synthesis of recent progress using examples from North America, Europe and Australia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of surface coal mining and land reclamation on soil properties: A review
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the mechanisms of coal mining and reclamation that affect soil properties and described soil development in reclamation, with an emphasis on the reclaimed minesoil (RMS) properties of reclamation sites.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rebuilding Soils on Mined Land for Native Forests in Appalachia
TL;DR: The use of salvaged native soils for mine soil construction when forest ecosystem restoration is the reclamation goal has been studied in this article, and it is shown that weathered rock spoils are generally superior to unweathered coal spoils when constructing mine soils for this purpose.

Management effects on growth, production and sustainability of managed forest ecosystems: Past trends and future directions
TL;DR: A review of forest management effects on growth, production, and sustainability of forest ecosystems is presented in this article, where the authors focus on the effects of reforestation and land stabilization of wind-and water-eroded land wrought by abusive agriculture.
