Journal ArticleDOI

A contemporary learning theory perspective on the etiology of anxiety disorders: It's not what you thought it was

TL;DR: How considerations of early learning histories and temperamental vulnerabilities affect the short- and long-term outcomes of experiences with stressful events and how contextual variables during and following stressful learning events affect the course of anxiety disorder symptoms once they develop is shown.
Journal ArticleDOI

Into the unknown: A review and synthesis of contemporary models involving uncertainty.

TL;DR: The current review and synthesis serves to define and contextualize fear of the unknown relative to related constructs, such as intolerance of uncertainty, and contemporary models of emotion, attachment, and neuroticism, to provide a robust foundation for transdiagnostic theoretical and empirical explorations into fearing the unknown and intolerance of Uncertainty.
Journal ArticleDOI

A novel theory of experiential avoidance in generalized anxiety disorder: A review and synthesis of research supporting a contrast avoidance model of worry

TL;DR: A new way of conceptualizing emotional sequelae in GAD is proposed by detailing the Contrast Avoidance Model of Worry, which states that individuals with GAD are more sensitive to feeling emotionally vulnerable to unexpected negative events, and that worry is employed to prolong and maintain a negative emotional state thereby avoiding an unexpected negative emotional shift, or contrast experience.
Journal ArticleDOI

Current theoretical models of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): Conceptual review and treatment implications

TL;DR: Five contemporary models of GAD are critiques: the Avoidance Model of Worry and GAD, the Emotion Dysregulation Model, mindfulness/acceptance-based approaches with existing cognitive behavioral models, an integrated model (AMW), and each model's corresponding evidence-based therapeutic interventions are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Achieving certainty about the structure of intolerance of uncertainty in a treatment-seeking sample with anxiety and depression

TL;DR: Psychometric properties of the best fitting solution, including internal reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity, are examined, consistent with intolerance of uncertainty being a transdiagnostic maintaining factor.
