It is indicated that the development of smoking-cessation programs for methadone clients merits further study and that such programs should stress relapse prevention techniques tailored to the specific needs of this population.
Abstract
Substance abusers in treatment have cigarette-smoking rates about three times that found in the general adult population, yet there is a paucity of published studies exarnining smoking-cessation programs for these clients. Accordingly, a behaviorally based smoking-cessation program for methadone maintenance clients was developed. and the efficacy of a methadone dose increase as a pharmacological adjunct was tested in a doubleblind placebo-controlled study. While no significant difference between experimental and control subjects in reported abstinence rates was found, subjects receiving a methadone increase reported significantly more nicotine craving and other withdrawal symptoms during the first week of abstinence than did controls. Measures of smoking rates indicated that experimental subjects smoked significantly more than controls throughout the 10-week study period. Although the initial smoking abstinence rate of 65% was encouraging, most subjects returned to smoking by the end of the study...

Co‐Morbidity of Smoking in Patients with Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorders

TL;DR: There is modest, evidence-based support for effective treatment interventions for nicotine addiction in patients with psychiatric disorders (PD) and substance use disorders (SUD), but further research is needed to increase the understanding of nicotine addiction and develop more effectivetreatment interventions.

TL;DR: Contingency management optimized outcomes using nicotine replacement therapy for reducing cigarette smoking during treatment for opiate dependence, although long-term effects are not generally maintained.

Smoking habits and attitudes in a methadone maintenance treatment population.

TL;DR: The data support feasibility of implementing smoking cessation treatments with this population in a setting that allows for convenient access to patients and close monitoring of progress, and suggest that MMT patients are interested in quitting and in using nicotine replacement products.

When to begin smoking cessation in substance abusers

TL;DR: Dogma, although starting to change, persists that cigarette smoking pales in comparison to other addictions and should not be addressed at the time of initial treatment for another addiction, but limited research to date does not support this dogma.

Smoking withdrawal symptoms in two weeks of abstinence

TL;DR: Trend analyses found that each symptom group except stimulation showed significant patterns or changes as a function of days in abstinence, and desire to smoke and psychological symptoms showed linear decreases as abstinence proceeded.
