An improved interval Newton operator

For nonlinear operators in partially ordered spaces interval extensions will be defined by means of Lipschitz operators. Assumptions are made for the inclusion monotony of these interval extensions. In this manner we obtain methods for interval iteration to include a solution of an operator equation. By transforming the equation in iterative form a parameter is chosen appropriately, so that the convergence of the interval sequence becomes as fast as possible.

Interval extensions and interval iterations

A new n-dimensional Newton method is presented. In each step a whole n-dimensional ball is determined rather than a single new approximation point. This ball contains the desired zero of the given function. The method is globally convergent. If the given initial ball does not contain any zero, then the method stops after a finite number of steps. Depending upon the assumptions which are made, the convergence of the ball radii is linear, superlinear or quadratic.

In dieser Arbeit werden zwei Verfahren — ein Gesamtschritt- und ein Einzelschrittverfahren — zur simultanen Bestimmung von reellen Polynomwurzeln angegeben. Besitzt das Polynom reelle einfache Wurzeln, so sind beide Verfahren stets konvergent, falls die Nullstellen in disjunkte Intervalle eingeschlossen sind. Das Gesamtschrittverfahren konvergiert mindestens quadratisch. Bezeichnet σn < 1 die einzige positive Nullstelle des Polynoms p(μ) = μn − μ − 1, so konvergiert das Einzelschrittverfahren mindestens von der Ordnung 1 + σn < 2.



In this paper we are representing two methods — a single-step-method and a total-step-method — for computing all roots of a polynomial simultaneously. If all roots are simple and real and if one known disjunct intervals, in which the roots are contained, both methods are always convergent. The convergence behaviour of the total-step-method is at least quadratic. Let σn < 1 be the unique positive zero of p(μ) = μn − μ − 1. Then the convergence order of the single-step-method is at least 1 + σn < 2.

Some extensions and modifications of the well-known Newton-method, developped during the last few years by means of interval arithmetic are yielding lower and upper bounds for the solution of a set of nonlinear equations. To have superlinear convergence behaviour it is necessary, in general, to invert intervalmatrices. In this note we give a modification converging superlinear, without the necessity of inverting matrices. Two numerical examples are given.

Verschiedene Erweiterungen und Modifikationen des Newton-Verfahrens gestatten es, eine Losung eines nichtlinearen Gleichungssystems imR n fortwahrend einzuschlieβen [1, 7, 10]. Um bei diesen Verfahren uberlineare Konvergenz zu erzielen, ist in jedem Iterationsschritt im allgemeinen eine Intervallmatrix zu invertieren. Es wird ein Verfahren angegeben, bei welchem diese Invertierung vermieden wird, ohne daβ dabei die uberlineare Konvergenz verlorengeht.
