Understandings and Misunderstandings of Multidimensional Poverty Measurement

TLDR
In this paper, the authors elucidate the strengths, limitations, and misunderstandings of multidimensional poverty measurement and provide an intuitive description of their measurement approach, including a "dual cutoff" identification step that views poverty as the state of being multiply deprived, and an aggregation step based on the traditional Foster Greer and Thorbecke (FGT) measures.
Abstract
Multidimensional measures provide an alternative lens through which poverty may be viewed and understood. In recent work we have attempted to offer a practical approach to identifying the poor and measuring aggregate poverty (Alkire and Foster 2011). As this is quite a departure from traditional unidimensional and multidimensional poverty measurement – particularly with respect to the identification step – further elaboration may be warranted. In this paper we elucidate the strengths, limitations, and misunderstandings of multidimensional poverty measurement in order to clarify the debate and catalyse further research. We begin with general definitions of unidimensional and multidimensional methodologies for measuring poverty. We provide an intuitive description of our measurement approach, including a ‘dual cutoff’ identification step that views poverty as the state of being multiply deprived, and an aggregation step based on the traditional Foster Greer and Thorbecke (FGT) measures. We briefly discuss five characteristics of our methodology that are easily overlooked or mistaken and conclude with some brief remarks on the way forward.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper explored the spatio-temporal changes and influencing factors of urban-rural disparity in child poverty (URDCP) in China between 2010 and 2018 based on the Alkire-Foster approach, spatial autocorrelation analysis and Geodetector method.

Household Level Non-Monetary Poverty in Ethiopia and its Driving Factors: a Multidimensional Approach with Panel Estimation

TL;DR: In this article, the authors employed Alkire and Foster (J Public Econ 95(7-8):476-487, 2011a) counting approach and Cerioli and Zani (A fuzzy approach to the measurement of poverty, Springer, Berlin, 1990) unequal weighting method to estimate the non-monetary multidimensional poverty in Ethiopia for three waves with fourteen country-specific indicators and four dimensions.

Assessing the impact of public transfer payments on the vulnerability of rural households to healthcare poverty in China

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors evaluated the effect of public transfer payments on the vulnerability of rural households to healthcare poverty and found that public transfer plays a vital role in reducing rural households' vulnerability to poverty.

TL;DR: Using a host of non-monetary aspects of poverty, the authors sheds light on the geographical distribution of multidimensional poverty in Turkey and finds that females, old disabled, and socially excluded individuals suffer the most from multIDimensional poverty.

Reducing Stunting through Multisectoral Efforts in Sub-Saharan Africa

TL;DR: This paper lays the groundwork for more effective multisectoral action on reducing stunting, by analysing and generating empirical evidence useful for informing the joint targeting of nutrition-sensitive interventions in the countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Poverty: An Ordinal Approach to Measurement

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a new measure of poverty, which should avoid some of the shortcomings of the measures currently in use, and used an axiomatic approach to derive the measure.
