Understandings and Misunderstandings of Multidimensional Poverty Measurement

TLDR
In this paper, the authors elucidate the strengths, limitations, and misunderstandings of multidimensional poverty measurement and provide an intuitive description of their measurement approach, including a "dual cutoff" identification step that views poverty as the state of being multiply deprived, and an aggregation step based on the traditional Foster Greer and Thorbecke (FGT) measures.
Abstract
Multidimensional measures provide an alternative lens through which poverty may be viewed and understood. In recent work we have attempted to offer a practical approach to identifying the poor and measuring aggregate poverty (Alkire and Foster 2011). As this is quite a departure from traditional unidimensional and multidimensional poverty measurement – particularly with respect to the identification step – further elaboration may be warranted. In this paper we elucidate the strengths, limitations, and misunderstandings of multidimensional poverty measurement in order to clarify the debate and catalyse further research. We begin with general definitions of unidimensional and multidimensional methodologies for measuring poverty. We provide an intuitive description of our measurement approach, including a ‘dual cutoff’ identification step that views poverty as the state of being multiply deprived, and an aggregation step based on the traditional Foster Greer and Thorbecke (FGT) measures. We briefly discuss five characteristics of our methodology that are easily overlooked or mistaken and conclude with some brief remarks on the way forward.

Nexus between health poverty and climatic variability in Pakistan: a geospatial analysis

TL;DR: In this article , the authors explored whether the geographic regions with diverse climate structure has a spatial association with health poverty; whether spatial disparities exist across districts of Pakistan; and whether spatial clusters and outliers of higher MHP were significant in Baluchistan and KP provinces.

Patterns and determinants of multidimensional poverty in secondary cities: Implications for urban sustainability in African cities

TL;DR: In this paper , spatial patterns and determinants of multidimensional poverty, measured by two metrics, were assessed using primary data from 775 households differentiated into core and fringe neighbourhoods, in a secondary city in Ghana.

Understanding the experiences of Indigenous minorities through the lens of spatial justice: the case of Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia

TL;DR: In this paper , a participatory approach using focus groups and participant observation reveals the lived experience of Orang Asli in two villages in Pahang State of Malaysia, and the findings of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) reveal the multiple income, education, health, nutrition and housing, among others, and underscore the importance the Orang asli place on education for their individual and community future.

Does the Right to Education Lead to Better Primary Education Outcomes

TL;DR: The authors investigated the relationship between the right to primary education as a legal construct (right as structure) and education outcomes and found that improvements in the right-as-structure can be effective in changing right as outcome, as long as we are patient enough.

Multidimensional Poverty Analysis: In Case of Jimma Zone, South West Ethiopia

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors employed the Alkire and Foster method of multidimensional poverty measures and the binary logistic regression model to examine determinants, incidence, severity and spatial dimension of multi-dimensional poverty in south west Ethiopia.

Poverty: An Ordinal Approach to Measurement

Amartya Sen

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a new measure of poverty, which should avoid some of the shortcomings of the measures currently in use, and used an axiomatic approach to derive the measure.
