TLDR
The design of the Versatile Message Transaction Protocol is described and some performance measurements of the protocol used in the V-Distributed System are described and it is shown that VMTP addresses all of the above issues within a single protocol without significant compromise.
Abstract
The authors identify and discuss three major categories of deficiencies in current transport protocols: performance, naming, and functionality. They describe the design of the Versatile Message Transaction Protocol (VMTP) and some performance measurements of the protocol used in the V-Distributed System. They show that VMTP addresses all of the above issues within a single protocol without significant compromise. >

Location discovery in a data network

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for location discovery in a data network includes receiving, at a first device, connection information from a neighboring network device and determining a physical location of the first device based on the connection information.

Multipoint communication: a survey of protocols, functions, and mechanisms

TL;DR: In this article, a survey of protocol functions and mechanisms for data transmission within a group, from multicast routing problems up to end-to-end multipoint transmission control is presented.
Book

High-Performance Communication Networks

TL;DR: This in-depth presentation of emerging technologies used to build high speed, high performance communication networks explains how the converging telephone, data, and CATV technologies are combined into high performance networks and how to plan, manage, and control these networks.

Locating devices in a data network

TL;DR: In this article, a system that associates physical locations with network-linked devices in a network to which such devices are connected is described, which can be used in any of a variety of ways to improve configuration accuracy, control, and security.
Journal ArticleDOI

A survey of light-weight transport protocols for high-speed networks

TL;DR: A comparative survey is presented of techniques used at the transport layer in eight representative protocols, most of which were designed to improve the protocol processing rate.

Implementing remote procedure calls

TL;DR: The overall structure of the RPC mechanism, the facilities for binding RPC clients, the transport level communication protocol, and some performance measurements are described, including some optimizations used to achieve high performance and to minimize the load on server machines that have many clients.

Host extensions for IP multicasting

S. E. Deering
TL;DR: This memo specifies the extensions required of a host implementation of the Internet Protocol to support multicasting and obsoletes RFCs 998 and 1054.

Implementing remote procedure calls

TL;DR: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) as mentioned in this paper is a high level language for providing communication across a network between programs written in a high-level language, which is similar to the one used in this paper.

Multicast routing in internetworks and extended LANs

TL;DR: This paper proposes extensions to two common internetwork routing algorithms---distance-vector routing and link-state routing---to support low-delay datagram multicasting, and shows how different link-layer and network-layer multicast routing algorithms can be combined hierarchically to support multicasting across large, heterogeneous internetworks.
