WZB-discussion paper

TLDR
In this article, a concept of accountability that can be used across diverse policy fields is proposed, drawing on three very different examples (regulation of the Internet, public-private partners, and Corporate Social Responsibility) of areas in which accountability issues are being raised, in order to explore the expectations, relationships and practices.
Abstract
The call for more accountability can be heard in many societal domains, leading to the suggestion that we are living in an “Age of Accountability.” It is striking that the discussion is running parallel in diverse fields, with little or no connection being made between the various attempts to clarify the concept and the issues encountered in practice. This contribution draws on three very different examples (regulation of the Internet, Public-Private Partnerships, and Corporate Social Responsibility) of areas in which accountability issues are being raised, in order to explore the expectations, relationships and practices. The intention is to propose a concept of accountability that can be used across diverse policy fields.
