Abstract

Conceptual framework for the analysis and classification of fossil concentrations

TL;DR: In this article, a ternary classification scheme for skeletal concentrations is proposed, based on three end members, representing biologic, sedimentologic, and diagenetic factors in skeletal concentration.
Journal ArticleDOI

Models for Fossil Concentrations: Paleobiologic Implications

TL;DR: In this article, four basic types of skeletal concentrations are modeled in terms of changes in sedimentation rate alone, and the model categorizes fossil concentrations on the relatively objective basis of their bed contacts, and uses this criterion to infer directional shifts in net sedimentation.

Patterns and processes of shell fragmentation in modern and ancient marine environments

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors define a fragment as being a piece of shell having less than 90% of its original form and outline the potential characteristics, pathways, and fates that shells and their fragments can have.
Journal ArticleDOI

Experimental Measurement of Shell Strength and its Taphonomic Interpretation

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used compressive and compactional loading to determine the best predictors of shell strength among a number of morphologic (length, width, height, weight, thickness) and taphonomic (presence of a drillhole, exposure to seawater, point contacts of shells) features.

Early Diagenesis and Lithification of Shallow-Water Carbonate Sediments in South Florida

TL;DR: The early phase does not generally mask original sediment properties, and often its effects may be just as indicative of the sedimentary environment as depositional features as discussed by the authors, which may also take place within submarine sediments, but apparently not as a lithifying cement.

Shell borings of sessile epibiontic organisms as palaeoecological guides (with examples from the dutch coast)

TL;DR: Fossil and recent shells from Dutch beaches and the bottom of the Adriatic Sea show borings which are attributed to marine Cyanophyta, Porifera, Annelida, Bryozoa, Mollusca and Arthropoda as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ammoniten-Ökologie am Beispiel des Oberjura

TL;DR: In vielen Fallen beeinflussen ausere Faktoren das Vorkommen der Ammoniten as mentioned in this paper, vor allem Stratigraphie, Phylogenie, Ontogenie.
Journal ArticleDOI

Preliminary observations of gastropod predation in the western Niger Delta

TL;DR: In this paper, an orientatory investigation of the microbenthos of parts of the western Niger Delta has indicated that drilling gastropods are locally abundant and, in addition to a large number of pelecypod and gastropod species, drills attack other drilling gastrobods, scaphopods, ostracods and even foraminifers.

Organic Dependence and Disease: Their Origin and Significance

TL;DR: Clarke as discussed by the authors brought together a number of instances of dependent life, tending to or attaining a parasitic habit, as presented by fossils mostly of palæozoic age, and reared an edifice of philosophic conclusions, imposing in its dimensions and decorated with much verbal ornament.
