Das Zusammentreffen bestimmter klinischer Erscheinungen mit pathologisch-anatomisch und histologischen Vergnderungen an der Zirbeldrfise war Veranlassung gewesen, diesem Organ eine innersekretorische T~tigkeit zuzuschrciben. Besonders Frankl-Hochwart und Marburg wiesen auf Grund eigener und in der Liter~tur nicdergelegter Fi~lle auf Beziehungen zwischen der genitalen Friihreife und Zirbeldriisentumoren bei jugendlichen Individuen hin. In Verfolg dieser Studien stellte d ann Marburg den S~tz ~uf, dal~ neben dem Hypergenitalismus allgemeine Vcrfettung ein charakteristisehes Symptom der Zirbeldriisengeschwulst d~rstcllt. Die Ann~hme Marburgs, dab diese Erscheinungen ~mf den Wegfall des die Entwicklung der Gesehlechtsdr5sen hemmenden Zirbeldriisensekrctes zuriickzuffihren sind, bliebcn nicht unwidersprochen. So sieht Askenasy im frfihzeitigen Auftreten dcr Gesehlechtsreife nicht den Ausfall eines hemmcnden Zirbeldriisenhormones, sondern er ffihrt diese Erscheinungen auf die Eigenart der sich dori, entwickelnden Gesehwtilste zuriick, die, an anderer Stelle sich etablierend, unter den gleichen Voraussetzungen das glciche klinische Bild zeitigcn mfissen. Die epiphystire Fettsucht wird von Lucae als nicht bestehend abgelehnt, sondern auf den durch den Druck der Zirbcltumoren entstehenden Hydrocephalus internus und seine Einwirkung auf die am Ventrikelboden liegenden Zentren zuriiekgefiihrt. Als Stiitze dieser Ansicht zieht er neben einem eigenen Falle eine klinische Beobachtung Wilhelm Mayers yon allgemeiner Verfcttung heran, bei tier der ganze Verlauf auf einen Hydrocephalus internus mit besonderer Beteiligung des drit ten Ventrikels schliegen lgf~t. Von besonderem Bel,%nge scheint unscrer Meinung die Tai~s~che zu sein, dab die Erscheinungen der genitalen Friihreife beim weiblichen Individuum durch Tumoren der Nebennierenrinde bewirkt werden k6nnen. Histologische und embryologische Untersuchungen über die Zirbel-drüse des Menschen

The number and distribution of mast cells were studied in pineal bodies of 16 mammalian species. In cattle, goat, monkey and guinea-pig the cells occurred in large numbers; in man, sheep, marmoset and mouse there was a moderate amount, and they were almost absent in pineal bodies of horse, rat, pig, dog, hamster, fox, cat and rabbit. In 17 human pineal bodies, 11 of which were obtained from normal individuals, the mast cell population was 3 ± 0.5 mast cells per microscopical field (0.32 mm in diameter). The histamine content in pineal bodies of several mammals was also determined. The substance occurred in high amount in the pineal body of cattle, in moderate amount in that of goat, man and sheep, and could not be detected in horse, pig, rabbit and rat. In human and cattle pineal bodies the histamine content could be correlated to the mast cell population; in other species the same correlation was only suggested. In in vitro experiments octylamine released histamine from the pineal body of cattle, while compound 48/80 was ineffective. It is suggested that the hypotensive action of pineal extract reported by several authors might be due to the histamine content of this gland.

Introductory The ancients believed that the pineal body or cornarium, as it was called, regulated the flow of vital spirits from the brain to the spinal cord, acting in this capacity in a manner similar to the pylorus of the stomach. It was assumed that it was a part of the brain, capable of movement, and stood as a guard between the third and fourth ventricles. But it is remarkable to find in the works of Galen, 10 whose name still clings to the neighboring veins, that he used the term "acervulus" in describing the psammona or sand bodies found in the gland, and in his works recur such illuminating statements as the following: "The pineal was devised for the same purpose as the other glands of the body."
