To solve this coverage gap, we propose VillageCell, a low-cost alternative to high-end cell phone networks.
By closely examining KPN we show how being an international mobile group specialising in the wholesale market across Europe has enabled it to exploit complementarities that exist between traditional and virtual businesses.
We also provide companies with a clear view of their deficiencies; moreover, cell phone service providers can have an accurate goal for developing future services.
The results highlight the importance of wholesale contracts with incumbent mobile network operators in determining the virtual operators’ business profitability.
