Our results are useful to network planners in terms of the placement of mesh nodes and the assignment of channels on the nodes in an 802.11-based multi-channel wireless mesh network.
These results hold for various traffic scenarios in both wireless LAN and mesh network configurations.
The experimental results obtained show that it outperforms IEEE 802.11s, the reference solution for 802.11-based Wireless Mesh Networks, as far as data throughput, delay, and packet loss are concerned.
In terms of throughput, our protocol is seen to outperform both the traditional IEEE 802.11 and previously proposed MAC protocols for use with directional antennas in ad hoc networks
These properties make the protocol well suited for wireless ad hoc networks.

By presenting several serious problems encountered in an IEEE 802.11-based multihop network and revealing the in-depth cause of these problems, we conclude that the current version of this wireless LAN protocol does not function well in multihop ad hoc networks.
Our study provides fundamental insight on the understanding and design of wireless ad hoc network.
This paper not only provides a framework for studying the performance of wireless mesh networks but also gives insights into the network design strategy for wireless mesh networks.
