This will lead to games being better tested and designed, with fewer failures when released.
They are implemented in commercial HVCMOS technologies, which makes the production cost effective when compared to hybrid pixel detectors.
With a new pixel readout chip (ROC), an additional fourth layer, two additional endcap disks, and a significantly reduced material budget the upgraded pixel detector will be able to sustain the efficiency of the pixel tracker at the increased requirements imposed by high luminosities and pile-up.
The CMS Phase-2 Pixel upgrade will require a high bandwidth readout system and high radiation tolerance for sensors and on-detector ASICs.
Although the crosstalk effect is getting worse for smaller pixel size, the 3 /spl mu/m pixel array demonstrates an excellent color rendition capability.

We show that pixel vignetting becomes more severe as CMOS technology scales, even for a 2-layer metal APS pixel.
Trends exhibit that even higher pixel density and lower power consumption will be required for future smart devices.
We show excellent pixel-level yield-including 100% pixel operability-for both formats.
It is concluded that Model 3 is best supported by the available data, although much more research is needed.
It will have an acceptable detection efficiency when the Medipix2 chip will be available, in the next future, bonded to a CdTe pixel detector.
In addition, FE-I4 will have smaller pixels and higher rate capability than the present generation of LHC pixel detectors.
The readout of the new pixel system will be most challenging in terms of data rate and readout speed.
Our toolkit addresses core challenges faced by developers when building pixel based enhancements, potentially opening up pixel based systems to broader adoption.
The pixel detector will comprise the five innermost layers, and will be instrumented with new sensor and readout electronics technologies to improve the tracking performance and cope with the HL-LHC environment, which will be severe in terms of occupancy and radiation.
Simulations of pixel detector compatible with the Medipix2 chip show that 3-D detectors have significant advantages in this area.
The upgrade will result in better tracking efficiency, improved precision of measurements and, in the future, compensation for radiation damage of the Pixel-Detector.
The new four layer pixel system will ensure excellent tracking, vertexing and b-tagging performance in the high luminosity pile-up conditions projected for the next LHC run.
