Abstract: Naturally infected Malayan toads (Bufo melanostictus) bore ulcerated lesions on the skin and tumour-like nodules on the abdominal wall and internal organs. The lesions consisted of inflammatory cells surrounding dark brown, septate fungal hyphae. The fungus was isolated in pure culture and reinoculation of healthy toads produced lesions identical with those occurring in nature. Cell free culture filtrates of the causal organism, inoculated subcutaneously, produced inflammatory reactions on the abdominal wall while aqueous mycelial extracts induced hyperplasia of the epidermal layers and cellular proliferation between the myocommata of the abdominal wall. Nodules were never shown to be malignant and the term “tumours” for these and similar structures in amphibia was not considered acceptable.
