TL;DR: The Health Sciences Library, University of Maryland, has implemented the Integrated Library System (ILS), a minicomputer-based library automation system developed by the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, National Library of Medicine.
Abstract: The Health Sciences Library, University of Maryland, has implemented the Integrated Library System (ILS), a minicomputer-based library automation system developed by the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, National Library of Medicine. The process of moving a library from a manual to a computerized system required comprehensive planning and strong commitment by the staff. Implementation activities included hardware and software modification, conversion of manual files, staff training, and system publicity. ILS implementation resulted in major changes in procedures in the circulation, reference, and cataloging departments.

TL;DR: The principle of uniform heading underlies the rules for headings in descriptive cataloging in the American tradition and is considerably compromised in cataloging practice today.
Abstract: The principle of uniform heading underlies the rules for headings in descriptive cataloging in the American tradition. The rationale and the evolution of the principle are examined and its implications discussed in terms of the history of cataloging codes. The ideal embodied in the principle of uniform heading has been undergoing gradual modification in recent codes and considerably compromised in cataloging practice today.

TL;DR: This paper reviews various programs aimed toward the building of a consistent database produced under quality control and accessible to the nation's libraries.
Abstract: Since the wide availability of bibliographic records in machine-readable form became a reality, most discussions concerning a "national database" imply a consistent database produced under quality control and accessible to the nation's libraries. This paper reviews various programs aimed toward the building of such a database and what is presently evolving toward this end.

TL;DR: Marketing can be adapted to library practice theoretically and graphically by using the marketing tools of product design, pricing, communication, and distribution as they relate to the library production tasks: acquisitions, cataloging, circulation/reference, and to new-materials promotion.
Abstract: Marketing can be adapted to library practice theoretically and shown graphically by using the marketing tools of product design, pricing, communication, and distribution as they relate to the library production tasks: acquisitions, cataloging, circulation/reference, and to new-materials promotion. Using Philip Kotler's concepts of marketing, new-materials promotion is directed toward the library's publics, and evaluation and planning are used to consistently meet their needs. A popular CAISDI device, the acquisitions list, serves as an example. The survey technique was used to evaluate the publication described, and a new, more effective format was planned and instituted.
