TL;DR: In this paper, the state-of-the-art in vehicle instrumentation is reviewed and the technical options now available to instrument manufacturers are described, with a focus on the need for multiple-use displays.
Abstract: The technology of vehicle instrumentation has become increasingly sophisticated. The application of electronics to dashboard instruments provides scope for the simultaneous display of a multiplicity of different kinds of information. But it is important that drivers are not overloaded with visual distractions. Information should ideally be displayed as and when required, but at the same location - hence the need for multiple–use displays. The state–of–the–art in vehicle instrumentation is reviewed and the technical options now available to instrument manufacturers are described.
