TL;DR: In this paper, an electronic data storage system including a memory, a plurality of magnetic disk units, and a controller is described, and the system recovers from memory loss by using a checkpoint log and a set of checkpoint segments on the disk that together contain backups of the index and other critical information needed to restore the system.
Abstract: An electronic data storage system including a memory, a plurality of magnetic disk units, and a controller. The memory contains an index cross-referencing logical address with physical addresses, an obsolete list and a free list. In response to a "write " command, the controller selects a physical address according to which segment can be used the most quickly, appends a tag to the data to be written, and writes the data to the selected segment. Appropriate entries are made in the index and the free list. The system recovers from memory loss by using a checkpoint log and a set of checkpoint segments on the disk that together contain backups of the index and other critical information needed to restore the system. Group indices are used for roll-back groups; operations on data in a group are invisible outside the group until after a "commit " command is issued.

TL;DR: An electronically controlled syringe system (14a) for connection to a balloon catheter or other balloon-type member and for automatically monitoring, displaying and recording inflation data was presented in this paper.
Abstract: An electronically controlled syringe system (14a) for connection to a balloon catheter or other balloon-type member and for automatically monitoring, displaying and recording inflation data when the syringe system is used to inflate the balloon of the catheter or other balloon-type member. A syringe (16) having a barrel (22) and a syringe plunger (24) is selectively operable to increase fluid pressure applied to the balloon catheter or other balloon member by sliding the plunger (24) further into the barrel (22). Positive pressure applied to the balloon catheter or member is released by withdrawing the syringe plunger (24) toward the rear of the barrel (22). A piezoresistive semiconductor transducer housed on the barrel (22) of the syringe (16) senses fluid pressure applied by the syringe. The electric signal output by the transducer is input to a controller (20a) where the signal is digitally processed so as to derive and record therefrom electronic data representing the magnitude of applied fluid pressure, and so as also to derive the length of time that fluid pressure is applied. The electronic data representing this information is automatically displayed and recorded. In one embodiment, the controller (20a) is also mounted onto the syringe barrel (22) to provide a digitally controlled inflation syringe system that is completely self-contained, and disposable.

TL;DR: In this paper, a data compression process and system that identifies the data type of an input data stream and then selects in response to the identified data type at least one data compression method from a set of data compression methods that provides an optimal compression ratio for that particular data type, thus maximizing the compression ratio of that data stream.
Abstract: A data compression process and system that identifies the data type of an input data stream and then selects in response to the identified data type at least one data compression method from a set of data compression methods that provides an optimal compression ratio for that particular data type, thus maximizing the compression ratio for that input data stream. Moreover, the data compression process also provides means to alter the rate of compression during data compression for added flexibility and data compression efficiency. Furthermore, a system memory allocation process is also provided to allow system or user control over the amount of system memory to be allocated for the memory intensive data compression process. System memory allocation process estimates the memory requirement to compress the input data stream, and allocates only that amount of system memory as needed by the data compression for memory allocation efficiency.

TL;DR: In this article, a sonde provided with magnets is used in well-fitted with a metallic casing to suppress any mechanical coupling with the sonde, which can be associated with an electronic data acquisition and transmission box fastened to the tubing.
Abstract: Sondes provided with magnets are used in wells fitted with a metallic casing. The sondes are pressed at the surface against the inner wall of the casing and taken down towards the bottom by means of a stiff driving element such as a tubing provided with thrust driving means for the longitudinal drive and lateral extensions for the lateral positioning of the sonde, or using pulling slings, etc. The wall of the sonde pressed against the casing can have the same bending radius as the casing in order to improve the coupling. The sonde can be associated with an electronic data acquisition and transmission box fastened to the tubing. Before any intervention is performed, the tubing is moved sufficiently in order to suppress any mechanical coupling with the sonde. After it has been used, the sonde can be displaced towards another point of measurement or taken up to the surface by moving the tubing.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a method for reading tachograph discs using a document scanner feeding data to a personal computer and associated printer, which produces a graphic display or printed summary of the data or image from the disc.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for reading tachograph discs employs a document scanner feeding data to a personal computer and associated printer. Analysis of electronic data from the scanner enables first the establishment of the disc type and orientation, followed by identification of the data traces and analysis of these by reference to concentric bands of the disc which are converted from circular to linear form, and by a line-following process, as part of the data-processing method. Activities and violations of international vehicle regulations can be identified by counting the crossing points of the graphic trace with respect to predetermined traces representing vehicle use parameters such as speed. The computer produces a graphic display or printed summary of the data or image from the disc.

Abstract: This paper examines the reduction of theodolite direction observations in connection with subsequent least squares adjustments. These reductions of direction measurements are often called station adjustments. Some of the reduction procedures are reviewed. Whether to use grand means, single arcs or half arcs in a least squares adjustment of a survey network is considered with regard to systematic instrument errors, electronic data recording equipment, a priori standard deviations and computer resources. The effect on the statistical testing of survey networks is also discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the measured image of some test pieces with plane and cylindrical surfaces were compared with their simulated figure, and the experimental and simulated results indicated that the pixel position of the image on the CRT can correspond to the coordinate value of the tooth flank of a gear, and that the transformation of the measured images on a CRT to the error surface of tooth flank defined on the plane of action of the gear, i.e., to the tooth form chart and the tooth trace form chart, is possible.
Abstract: In interferometry measurement using laser holography, it is not easy to find a definite relation between the measured image pattern and the topography of the actual surface. The main reason is that each of the measuring object, measurig apparatus, electronic data processor and CRT display has its own coordinate system, and the transformig or mapping relation between them is obscure. In this report, measured image of some test pieces with plane and cylindrical surfaces were compared with their simulated figure. Subsequently, tooth flank of a gear, which is a three-dimensional curved suface in which high accuracy in form is required, was chosen as the object of measurement. To obtain the relation between each coordinate system of a measuring object, of optical parts in the measuring appartus and of the image on a CRT, a method is proposed which requires the simulated contour of the diffracted figure of the objective curved surface to be measured corresponding to and fitting the actually measured and observed image pattern on the CRT. The experimental and simulated results indicate that the pixel position of the image on the CRT can correspond to the coordinate value of the tooth flank, and that the transformation of the measured image on the CRT to the error surface of tooth flank defined on the plane of action of the gear, i. e., to the tooth form chart and to the tooth trace form chart, is possible.

Abstract: An electronic counting system using hydrophobic grid-membrane filters (HGMF) and the HGMF Interpreter was evaluated for its usefulness in enumerating nalidixic acid resistant Salmonella in frozen chicken caeca. Salmonella recovery was equivalent on both Hektoen Enteric and EF-18 agars. However, the color of the Salmonella growth on EF-18 agar was more easily differentiated by the HGMF Interpreter electronic counting system. the study showed that a 4 h resuscitation on a nonselective medium was required in order to maximize the subsequent recovery on Hektoen Enteric agar, though not on EF-18 agar. Using the EF-18 agar as the Salmonella selective medium, a method was established that recorded counts of nalidixic acid resistant Salmonella rapidly and easily in electronic data files, for subsequent retrieval and manipulation.

Abstract: A photometric gauge for measuring the diameters of a workpiece turned about a central axis. The apparatus comprises a light source which scans a light beam across and on either side of a workpiece, to reflect scanned light from a mirror having an approximately elliptical curvature. The light source is located at one focus of the elliptical mirror and a light detector is located at the other focus. Light passing beside the workpiece from the light source focus reflects back to the light detector focus, and the light detector generates an electrical signal. The signal is used by an electronic data processor, along with known geometric parameters, to determine the diameter of the workpiece. A profiler, using the above photometric gauge, takes diameter measurement at regular intervals along the axis of the workpiece, and plots the diameter versus axial position data.
