TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated the evolution of the microstructure and rheology of a lubricating grease during its manufacturing process by inducing the saponification reaction between 12-hydroxystearic acid and hydrated lithium hydroxide within a naphtenic lubricating oil medium.
Abstract: The overall objective of this work was to evaluate the evolution of the microstructure and rheology of a lubricating grease during its manufacturing process. With this aim, lithium lubricating greases were prepared by inducing the saponification reaction between 12-hydroxystearic acid and hydrated lithium hydroxide within a naphtenic lubricating oil medium, applying a controlled-temperature programme. The manufacturing process was followed through the mixing rheometry technique by measuring the evolution of torque with processing time. Samples of incipient and finished grease were taken from the stirred tank at different processing times. Rheological (linear viscoelasticity and viscous flow) and mechanical stability tests, as well as morphological studies, were carried out on each sample. The changes found in the microstructure and rheology of a lubricating grease during its processing have been related to the soap concentration in the reacting mixture, the waxy soap transition at high temperatures and the further cooling steps. From the experimental results obtained, we may conclude that a suitable lithium lubricating grease is a highly structured system, based on the development of a three-dimensional network due to the presence of metallic soap crystallites.

TL;DR: Data is presented on the thermo-oxidation behavior and tribology of biodegradable greases formulated with soybean oil and different compositions of metal soap thickener, as well as the antioxidative effect of some suitable additives.
Abstract: The biodegradable properties and lubricating ability of greases depend on both the base oil and the thickener. Mineral oils are the most widely used lubricant base fluids due to their inherent lubricity and low cost, but recent environmental awareness has forced consideration of the use of biodegradable fluids such as vegetable oils and certain synthetic fluids in grease formulations. This study presents data on the thermo-oxidation behavior and tribology of biodegradable greases formulated with soybean oil and different compositions of metal soap thickener. The composition of thickener has been varied by using fatty acids with different degrees of unsaturation and fatty acids of different chain lengths. The improvement of thermo-oxidation and tribological properties as a result of changing thickener/base oil ratio and the antioxidative effect of some suitable additives have also been evaluated. Keywords: Grease; soybean oil; vegetable oils; oxidative stability; friction

TL;DR: In this article, a grease based on sunflower oil and polymer thickener has been developed for excavator use in two different applications: in the reduction gear (crown) and in the articulations (pin).
Abstract: There is a great consumption of grease in an excavator (∼200 Kg/year). This big amount of lubricant is poured directly to the environment. A grease based in sunflower oil and polymer thickener has been developed. An extensive tribological characterization has been carried out in order to ensure a good compromise between EP and AW properties so that the grease could be used in two different applications: in the reduction gear (crown) and in the articulations (bushing/pin). The performance of the biogrease has been compared with two reference mineral lubricants.Copyright © 2005 by ASME

TL;DR: In this paper, seven spur gear experiments were performed to study the influence of torque, lubricant type, and atmosphere on gear tooth wear and discoloration of perfluoro type grease.
Abstract: To improve understanding of gears operating with a perfluoro type space-qualified grease, seven spur gear experiments were performed. Test conditions were selected to study the influences of torque, lubricant type, and atmosphere. Two testing torques provided nominal pitch-line Hertz stresses greater and lesser than the contact stress limit as recommended by the grease manufacturer. As was expected, all tests resulted in some gear tooth wear. Discoloration of the perfluoro type grease occurred for all tests. Tests in dry nitrogen produced some dark-grey colored perfluoro type grease. Testing in either ambient or dry air produced red debris after short test duration, and for tests of longer duration large amounts of red debris, red grease, and wear were evident. Tests using higher torques produced more debris. The first indications of discoloration occurred more quickly with higher test torques. Total amounts of wear were quite significant, up to four times the profile tolerance for AGMA Class 10 gears.
