TL;DR: In this paper, a system and method for generating an updated version of or reconstructing a previously enforced version of, a local client security policy stored in an application guard is presented. But the application guard uses the distributed change to update the currently enforced version, while the policy manager generates a reversing delta equal to the reverse of the change (or accumulation of changes).
Abstract: A system and method for generating an updated version of, or reconstructing a previously enforced version of, a local client security policy stored in an application guard. To update a local security policy, a policy manager distributes a change (or an accumulation of changes) to the currently enforced version of the security policy through a network to the application guard. The application guard uses the distributed change to update the currently enforced version of the local client security policy. To reconstruct a previously enforced version of a local security policy, the policy manager generates a reversing delta equal to the reverse of the change (or accumulation of changes) from the previously enforced version to the currently enforced version of the security policy, and distributes the reversing delta through the network to the application guard. The application guard applies the distributed reversing delta to the currently enforced version of the local client security policy to reconstruct the previously enforced version of the security policy.

TL;DR: This paper presents a novel method for deciding the locations of "guards" required to visually inspect a given 2D workspace that is computationally efficient and that, although suboptimal, decides a small number of guards.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel method for deciding the locations of "guards" required to visually inspect a given 2D workspace. The decided guard positions can then be used as control points in the path of a mobile robot that autonomously inspects a workspace. It is assumed that each of the guards (or the mobile robot that visits the guard positions in some order) is equipped with a panoramic camera of 360 degrees field of view. However, the camera has limited visibility, in the sense that it can observe with sufficient detail objects that are not further than a predefined visibility range. The method seeks to efficiently produce solutions that contain the smaller possible number of guards. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is computationally efficient and that, although suboptimal, decides a small number of guards.

TL;DR: An overview of the MDARS evolutionary development approach (using mobile robots and fixed sensors) for both physical security and force protection missions is provided.
Abstract: : The Mobile Detection Assessment Response System (MDARS) is a joint Army-Navy development effort to field mobile robots at Department of Defense (DoD) sites for physical security and automated inventory missions MDARS was initiated in 1989 to improve the effectiveness of a shrinking guard force, but was quickly expanded to address the intensive manpower requirements associated with accounting for high-dollar and critical DoD assets, Two types of autonomous platforms patrol inside warehouses (Interior) and outside of storage facilities (Exterior), carrying payloads for intruder detection, inventory assessment, and barrier assessment. The MDARS console for command and control is based upon the Multiple Resource Host Architecture (MRHA), which allows a single human guard to oversee and monitor up to 255 platforms and/or unmanned sensors, Recent improvements to satisfy mission requirements for physical security have expanded the system capabilities to enable force-protection missions in tactical situations, Rapid-prototyping approaches have facilitated investigations into aiming and firing less-than-lethal weapons on an unmanned platform, deployment of a marsupial capability to carry smaller robots, and seamless all-digital communication between unmanned sensors and unmanned ground and air vehicles, This paper provides an overview of the MDARS evolutionary development approach (using mobile robots and fixed sensors) for both physical security and force protection missions Special treatment is provided on feedback from developmental tests at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD, and operational tests at Defense Distribution Depot Susquehanna PA,

TL;DR: Stentiford as mentioned in this paper traces the evolution of the American militia over the past century, demonstrating its transformation from an amalgamation of state units into the National Guard, and analyzes the challenges faced by State Guards as they built their new militia with leftover men and material.
Abstract: Since colonial times Americans have used the militia to maintain order during both war and peacetime. Barry M. Stentiford tells the story of these militia units - variously called home guards, State Guard, National Guard Reserve, and State Defense Forces. Stentiford traces the evolution of the militia over the past century, demonstrating its transformation from an amalgamation of state units into the National Guard. Ironically, the National Guard made the creation of other militia forces necessary during periods of war, as the home guards were organized to fill the vacuum left when the National Guard was called up. Stentiford analyzes the challenges faced by State Guards as they built their new militia with leftover men and material. He also examines the role of the State Guard: providing relief during disasters, providing military training for future draftees, and broadening participation in military units during wartime by giving a role to men who, because of their age or occupation, could not join the federal forces. Today modern state militias must define a role for themselves in a society that increasingly views them as anachronistic. They must also compete with so-called unorganized militias for the title of true heir to the American militia tradition.

TL;DR: The American City Planning Institute (ACPI) was founded by engineers, architects, civic reformers, landscape architects, real estate developers, and academics, who agreed on one premise: that some kind of planning had to be implemented to bring order to the nation's burgeoning metropolises as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: In the early twentieth century, when the modern planning movement was in its adolescence, practitioners from a broad range of backgrounds came together to form the American City Planning Institute. It was a heady time for the emerging profession. The fifty-two charter members, who included engineers, architects, civic reformers, landscape architects, real estate developers, and academics, may only have agreed on one premise: that some kind of planning had to be implemented to bring order to the nation’s burgeoning metropolises. What that planning would encompass they hotly contested. Some advocated beautification and redesign to bring social and aesthetic order to suburbs and cities. Others argued for the ongoing and efficient management of municipal design and policy to support economic development. A third contingent promoted social survey and related reform work in a conception of planning focused on achieving more equitable social and physical conditions in the nation’s cities. There were still other voices as well. As the new profession moved from adolescence to maturity, however, the debates mostly subsided. By the late 1920s, the planning profession had achieved a degree of consensus about both its purpose and its practices, and that consensus held for most of the remaining twentieth century. At the heart of the mature profession is a narrower goal: applying professional expertise to guide and manage the processes of metropolitan development, especially through manipulation of the physical landscape. The key locations for learning and practicing planning also crystallized as the profession evolved. Accredited university schools of planning that administer standardized curricula and methods became the primary venue for training professional planners, while modern city governments served as their primary employers.
