TL;DR: A review of engineering coating for engine application is presented in this article, where issues relating to dimensional stability, tribological properties, lubrication, coefficient of friction, hot hardness, amenability for honing, surface roughness and topography, residual stress, adherence, damage tolerance and resistance, pores density and conditions and cost performance are discussed.
Abstract: In this paper, a review of engineering coating for engine application is presented. Issues relating to dimensional stability, tribological properties, lubrication, coefficient of friction, hot hardness, amenability for honing, surface roughness and topography, residual stress, adherence, damage tolerance and resistance, pores density and conditions and cost performance are discussed. There exist advantages and limitations of conventional materials systems and techniques such as chemical-vapor-deposited diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating, plasma sprayed metal matrix composite coating, tribologically functional ceramic coatings, etc. Nano-grains of a crystalline phase hold promise to solve several such problems present in conventional coatings. In addition, surface-related problems are addressed for high performance engines and hydrogen powered automotive engines.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the mechanical behavior of steel components machined by hard turning, grinding, and honing, and found that white layer increases nanohardness but decreases modulus of a turned surface.
Abstract: Hard turning, grinding, and honing are common finishing processes in today 's production. The machined subsurface undergoes severe deformation and possible microstructure changes in a small scale subsurface layer (<20 μm). Mechanical behavior of this shallow layer is critical for component performance such as fatigue and wear. Due to the small size of this region, mechanical behavior of this shallow layer is hard to measure using traditional material testing. With the nanoindentation method, mechanical behavior (nanohardness and modulus) at the microscale in subsurface was measured for AISI 52100 and AISI 1070 steel components machined by hard turning, grinding, and honing. The test results show that white layer increases nanohardness but decreases modulus of a turned surface. Nanohardness and modulus of the ground surface are slightly smaller than the honed one in the subsurface. However, grinding produces higher nanohardness and modulus in near-surface (< 10 μm) than honing, while honing produces more uniform hardness and modulus in the near-surface and subsurface, and would improve component performance. Nanohardness and modulus of the machined near-surface are strongly influenced by strain hardening, residual stress, size-effect, and microstructure changes.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for axially moving a tool in an inner surface of a bore and pressing a cutting assembly at the inner surface with a feed force for processing the inner surfaces is described.
Abstract: The method involves axially moving a honing tool (150) in an inner surface of a bore (115), and pressing a cutting assembly (160) at the inner surface with a feed force for processing the inner surface. Axial movement of the honing tool is strongly guided for producing an axial movement of the honing tool parallel to a boring axis (111) of the bore. The bore form is measured during and/or after a honing operation for determining a form-actual value, and difference between the form-actual value and a reference form of the bore is processed for correcting the controlling of the feed force. An independent claim is also included for a honing machine for executing a method for honing an inner surface of a bore in a workpiece.

TL;DR: In this paper, a rough surface flow simulation program was developed to generate flow factors and shear stress factors for three-dimensional cylinder liners surface textures, and the simulation results suggest that ring-pack friction reduction is possible if the liner honing cross hatch angle is decreased by reducing the feed-to-speed ratio of the honing tool.
Abstract: Frictional losses in the piston ring-pack of an engine account for approximately 20% of the total frictional losses within an engine. Although many non-conventional cylinder liner finishes are now being developed to reduce friction and oil consumption, the effects of the surface finish on ring-pack performance is not well understood. The current study focuses on modeling the effects of three-dimensional cylinder liner surface anisotropy on piston ring-pack performance. A rough surface flow simulation program was developed to generate flow factors and shear stress factors for three-dimensional cylinder liner surface textures. Rough surface contact between the ring and liner was modeled using a previously published methodology for asperity contact pressure estimation between actual rough surfaces. The surface specific flow factors, shear stress factors, and asperity contact model were used in conjunction with MIT’s previously developed ring-pack simulation program to predict the effects of different surface textures on ring-pack behavior. Specific attention was given to the effect of honing groove cross-hatch angle on piston ring-pack friction in a stationary natural gas engine application, and adverse effects on engine oil consumption and durability were also briefly considered. The modeling results suggest that ring-pack friction reduction is possible if the liner honing cross hatch angle is decreased by reducing the feed-to-speed ratio of the honing tool. Reducing the cross-hatch angle increased oil flow blockage and increased the lubricant’s effective viscosity during mixed lubrication. This allowed more load to be supported by hydrodynamic pressure, reducing ring-pack friction. However, there appeared to be a potential for increased oil consumption and scuffing tendency corresponding to a decrease in honing cross-hatch angle.Copyright © 2005 by ASME

TL;DR: In this paper, a functional analysis approach based on morphological filters was proposed to separate the core texture from the valleys, resulting in better correlation with process and functional measures, and a cause effect model was built and used for performance prediction.
Abstract: Plateau honing produces a unique texture on cylinder liner surface. This surface is engineered to simulate the actual running in process of the engine and results in a core layer superimposed on valleys. Because of the complex nature of the surface, characterization of such surfaces is very different from traditional surface texture analysis. Different filtering techniques have been employed to remove waviness from these profiles. Parameters are subsequently computed from the bearing area curve of the roughness profile. With recent progress in filtering of surface profiles, we propose a functional analysis approach based on morphological filters. The advantage of this technique is the clear separation of the core texture from the valleys resulting in better correlation with process and functional measures. A number of profiles are collected from two sets of liners with different performance characteristics. A cause effect model is built and used for performance prediction.

Abstract: Recently, wet blasting is generally used such as liquid honing and water jet machining in surface before plating of stainless steel. The outstanding feature of wet blasting is to prevent generation of static electric charge, to use micro abrasive grain, and to have cushioning for workpiece. On the other hand, the disadvantage of wet blasting is to generate corrosion of equipment and liquid waste under processing. Moreover, the using abrasive grain is available on a limited basis. In particular, improvement disposal of liquid waste under processing is crucial in the near future. This paper makes proposal for improvement of surface texture by utilizing dry blasting, and it conducts improvement of surface texture about martensite stainless steel (SUS420J2 In JIS), which is used in material for scale applications. As a result, it is cleared that relationship between surface texture and blasting conditions. Furthermore, based on these results, it reports relationship between surface texture and wettability.

Abstract: The utility model discloses a honing knife bar with the replaceable honing sleeve which comprising a honing sleeve axle, a locking nut and a guide nut. The utility model is characterized in that: a honing stick slot which is fixedly provided with a honing stick is manufactured on the lateral wall of the honing sleeve; a regulating screw is composed of a regulating handle, a positioning table and a regulating arm; a honing core axle is composed of an axial rod, an expansion rod and a positioning rod. A position pin is movably installed in a chute on the lateral wall of the honing sleeve axle. The utility model is that; a honing rod composed of the honing sleeve axle and the honing sleeve, a honing axial is composed of the regulating screw and the honing core axle, and the honing sleeve axle and the honing sleeve are connected as a complete honing cutter through the regulating screw and the honing core axle. Because the honing sleeve axle and the honing sleeve are separated, the production can continue only through replacing the honing sleeve with the multiple reuse of the core pin when the honing sleeve is damaged at each time, and the core pin can not be replaced, and the whole knife bar is not abandoned. Consequently, the integrated cost of the knife bar and the producing cost of the product are greatly reduced, and the 45% expenses of the knife bar are economized according to the estimation.
