TL;DR: The relation of the law of hubris to certain kinds of sexual misconduct and to sexual aspects of honour and shame has not been fully recognized as discussed by the authors, and an exploration of this relation may help to mark out some of the ground which a fuller treatment would have to cover.
Abstract: In recent years a considerable literature on the scope and meaning of the word hubris has done much to clarify the nature of this important concept. However, some important aspects of hubris deserve more detailed attention. In particular, a full account of the social context and moral psychology of the ideology, social practices, and legal prosecutions involving hubris would make a fundamental contribution to our understanding of Athenian society and the role which litigation played in moderating or exacerbating social conflicts. Indeed, such an account, particularly if it drew upon recent advances in the social anthropology of agonistic societies, would necessarily increase our appreciation of the centrality of hubris and the related values of honour and shame in Athenian social relations. While the goals of the present study are far more modest, in a sense they represent a first step in this direction. Since, as I will argue, the relation of the law of hubris to certain kinds of sexual misconduct and to sexual aspects of honour and shame has not been fully recognized, an exploration of this relation may help to mark out some of the ground which a fuller treatment would have to cover.

TL;DR: In any history of Greek mythological writing, the longer Homeric Hymns deserve a place of honour as discussed by the authors and are the almost unique vehicle of a distinctive and important form of narrative about the divine world.
Abstract: In any history of Greek mythological writing, the longer Homeric Hymns deserve a place of honour. They are the almost unique vehicle of a distinctive and important form of narrative about the divine world. As a prooimion to a discussion of the Hymn to Demeter, it may be worth sketching some general characteristics of the genre, to bring out its special interest for the historian of religion, and indeed for anyone who cares for the imaginative world of the Greeks.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the Corinthians were not called upon to honour them by Paul in 1 Cor 6, if they are indeed the same persons mentioned in Rom 13.
Abstract: Paul's teaching about the attitude of the Christian towards the state is well known in Rom 13. There the rulers are God's vicegerents, God's deacons for the praising of those who do good and for the punishing of evil-doers. All are to be subject to them in order to avoid God's wrath and to maintain a good conscience. They are deserving of financial support as God'a λeιτουργο and are to be shown honour and respect. Does Paul espouse a contradictory view of the state in 1 Cor 6? Here they are not God's λeιτουργο, but οἱἄδικοι, the unrighteous, v. 1. They are those least esteemed in the κκλησα, v. 4, and appearing before them is plainly wrong for Christians, v. 6. The Corinthians were not called upon to honour them by Paul in 1 Cor 6, if they are indeed the same persons mentioned in Rom 13.

Abstract: This paper went through several versions over a number of years, and I benefitted from comments and suggestions by: Matthew Cooper, James Morrison, Colin Scott, George W. Stocking, Jr., and Bruce Trigger. Others who commented as participants in aspects of the history analysed here included: Eleanor Leacock, Edward S. Rogers, Clifton Amsbury, and Edmund Carpenter. I have returned to aspects of these issues in later papers, especially: in 2009 in “Histories of the Past, Histories of the Future: The Committed Anthropologies of Richard Slobodin, Frank G. TL;DR: The frequency with which corruption erupted into Hanoverian politics is indicative of an ancien retgime adjusting to the economic conditions of a "modern" society.
Abstract: In October 1732, the cashier and the banker of the Charitable Corporation absconded to France, having embezzled \"more than half a million of money\".' This fraudulent diversion of funds intended to provide employment and relief for the poor caused uproar, but it was not an isolated incident. Three other statutory bodies-the South Sea Company, the York Buildings Company, and the Derwentwater Trustalso fell victim to corruption during the early eighteenth century. Individual politicians were guilty too; in 1725, for example, the Lord Chancellor was fined no less than £30,000 for corruption offences. The integrity of the government was further undermined by Walpole's willingness to shield those of his supporters implicated in illegal or irregular activities.2 The frequency with which corruption erupted into Hanoverian politics is indicative of an ancien retgime adjusting to the economic conditions of a \"modern\" society. Spearheading this transition was the Financial Revolution of the late seventeenth century, which saw the ascent of the joint-stock company and the development of a system of public credit based on the Bank of England, the East India Company, and later the South Sea Company.3 The ramifications were far-reaching. Not only did the changed economic context open up new opportunities for financial corruption, but political life was transformed as well. Landed critics of the increasingly powerful \"monied interest\" revived the classical model of civic virtue to bolster their attack. The good citizen used his property to

People with open minded will always try to seek for the new things and information from many sources. On the contrary, people with closed mind will always think that they can do it by their principals. So, what kind of person are you?

Abstract: "The Social Sciences in Canada" is about the background and history of the Social Science Federation of Canada in honour of its fifty years of national activity. There can be little doubt that during the last fifty years the federation, and its predecessors, have had a substantial impact on the development of the social sciences in Canada. The history of this organization is probably the best barometer that we have for recording the changes that have occurred in the relation between social scientists and Canadian society.

TL;DR: From Enarques to Managers in Senegal as mentioned in this paper The third generation of the Senegalese political and administrative elite, largely made up of engineers and managers, is in the process of dominating the field of power, at the expense of the enarques who themselves ousted the primary teachers, the elite which held sway from 1945-47 until 1962-63, in spite of the policy pursued by the French colonial administration, aimed at preventing the advancement of native personnel.
Abstract: From Enarques to Managers in Senegal. The third generation of the Senegalese political and administrative elite, largely made up of engineers and "managers", is in the process of dominating the field of power, at the expense of the enarques who themselves ousted the primary teachers, the elite which held sway from 1945-47 until 1962-63, in spite of the policy pursued by the French colonial administration, aimed at preventing the advancement of native personnel. With the restructuring of the education and training System after 1955, teachers progressively lost this privileged position, having failed to understand sufficiently early the changes then under way. Until 1970, enarques dominated the highest levels of the State, before moving into politics within the Socialist par- ty, in power since independence. Since the 1980s, their dominant position has been challenged by the "managers", who are essentially "techno-economists" who have not yet secured genuine politico-administrative power. To acquire this power, the managers are likely to make use, like their predecessors, of certain values and practices of traditional native society, while adapting them to the "business world". These include family or ethnie solidarity, the demands of the "commerce of honour and dignity", the search for the support of traditional or religious personalities, etc.
