Abstract: Mass transfer to the base of an unbaffled cylindrical tank which is agitated by an axially-mounted impeller is studied experimentally and theoretically. Measured local mass transfer coefficients vary with radial position and fall within theoretical bounds derived for the case of a fluid undergoing solid body rotation above the boundary layer on the base. Average mass transfer coefficients and torque delivered to the base are fitted by consistent theoretical expressions, and an empirical correlation is developed for calculating the average liquid phase mass transfer coefficient.

TL;DR: In this article, the regenerative air-cooled gas turbine engine is characterized by having the compressor, combustor, drive and power turbines, and regenerator all concentric with the longitudinal axis.
Abstract: A regenerative air-cooled gas turbine engine, particularly applicable to and adequately clean burning for automotive and like applications requiring small size at a power rating in the 100-400 h.p. range. The engine is characterized by having the compressor, combustor, drive and power turbines, and regenerator all concentric with the longitudinal axis. The cool air supplied from the compressor to the regenerator passes in a tubular shroud-like flow which surrounds all but the compressor end of the engine and thus encloses the hot section of the engine. Cool air direct from the compressor output is ducted to the combustor and pre-mixed with run fuel supplied by a slinger which separately introduces run fuel and start/idle fuel, the pressure of the latter being boosted by a damper bearing acting as a fuel pump. Simplicity and low manufacturing cost are achieved by having substantially all gas flow confining surfaces in the form of surfaces of revolution. Cooling of nozzle vanes and the drive turbine impeller blades by air ducted from the tubular flow allows turbine gas inlet temperatures of 2,200* F. and higher. The regenerator is of the rotary disc type and has low cost, easily maintained non-rubbing seals.

TL;DR: In this article, a flow machine with a rotatable impeller magnetically supported within a machine casing such that the impeller is spaced at all points from the inside walls of the machine casing is described.
Abstract: A flow machine for pumping and/or measuring the flow of agressive, radioactive, or special-purity flow mediums. The flow machine is provided with a rotatable impeller magnetically supported within a machine casing such that the impeller is spaced at all points from the inside walls of the machine casing. The casing inside walls and the outer configuration of the impeller include a central cylindrical center section joined by conically outwardly flared end sections. Electromagnetics are arranged in the conical flared section outside of the inside wall for cooperation with magnetic material arranged in the corresponding conically flared sections of the impeller to support the impeller in position. The conically flared section facilitate both radial and axial support of the impeller, since both axial and radial components of electromagnetic force is experienced at the conically flared sections of the impeller. Means are provided to detect the gaps around the circumference of the impeller between the impeller and the casing inside walls, which means provide signals to an electronic device for controlling the respective current supply to the electromagnets so as to assure the maintenance of a substantially uniform circumferential gap around the impeller for all operating conditions. In one embodiment, the flow machine is constructed as an axial flow pump driven by an asynchronous electric motor having a rotor formed around the cylindrical section of the impeller and a stator arranged outside of the inside walls along the cylindrical section thereof. A further embodiment of the flow machine is constructed as a flow meter which includes means for detecting the rotational speed of the impeller, which rotational speed is a direct function of the volumetric flow and/or velocity of the flow medium through the impeller.

Abstract: A cascade diffuser providing high pressure recovery in radial flow turbomachinery has first and second vaned diffuser stages arranged between an impeller and collector. The first and second stages are formed by thin, straight vanes which contribute substantially to the pressure recovery rate. The first stage vanes are preferably spaced apart from the impeller to provide a vaneless region for initially conditioning fluid flow from the impeller. The leading edges of the first stage vanes are preferably tapered to provide a semi-vaneless transition region between the vaneless region and first diffuser stage. The diffuser walls form a flow path between the impeller and collector between which the first and second stage vanes are disposed.

TL;DR: An aquarium filter pump has a vertical pump casing conforming to an elongated impeller having a smaller lower end and a larger upper end above the top of the filter tank as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: An aquarium filter pump which draws water from below filter material in a filter tank and returns it to an aquarium has a vertical pump casing conforming to an elongated impeller having a smaller lower end and a larger upper end above the top of the filter tank, the smaller lower end priming the upper end for more efficient pumping action. The pump motor is mounted on top of the casing and has a shaft extending down into it on which the impeller is mounted. The upper end of the impeller is formed as an inverted conical boss containing blades which throw water away from the shaft entrance. The shaft entrance into the casing has an adjustable seal admitting air for selective aeration. The casing has relatively rotatable inner and outer casings closed at the top and open at the bottom with a clearance therebetween. The outlet tube on the outer casing slides over an outlet opening in the inner casing so that relative rotation of the casings directs selected proportions of pumped water through the outlet tube and between the casings for recirculation back into the filter tank.

TL;DR: In this article, it is argued that diffuser performance is largely controlled by the combined effect of the boundary layer conditions on the hub and shroud walls at impeller exit and the diffusion required to the diffuser throat.
Abstract: A novel analysis of the hub and shroud wall boundary layer growth through the diffusing system of a centrifugal compressor is proposed to model the physical processes. It is shown that the diffuser throat blockage and total pressure loss characteristics can be accurately predicted for a 6:1 PR stage. The static pressure effectiveness and stalling limit are successfully predicted qualitatively, but are underestimated and overestimated by 14 and 12 percent respectively. It is argued that diffuser performance is largely controlled by the combined effect of the boundary layer conditions on the hub and shroud walls at impeller exit and the diffusion required to the diffuser throat. For this reason, it is contended that, for best performance at high pressure ratio (≃ 12:1), impeller exit Mach number must be minimized by employing zero to negative prewhirl at impeller entry which in turn maximizes impeller entry shroud relative Mach number. Performance maps are presented for a single-stage centrifugal compressor based on this premise with specific speed = 90. At 15, 12 and 101 PR, 72, 75 and 76.8 percent efficiency, respectively, were attached at 2.6 lb/sec.Copyright © 1972 by ASME

TL;DR: A rotary electric fuel pump using a permanent magnet motor is constructed of parts having a simple geometric pattern for mass production by sheet metal stamping and plastic molding as mentioned in this paper, which provides for housing a cylindrical magnet stator for a motor field and a high-speed armature.
Abstract: A rotary electric fuel pump using a permanent magnet motor is constructed of parts having a simple geometric pattern for mass production by sheet metal stamping and plastic molding. The construction provides for housing a cylindrical magnet stator for a motor field and a high-speed armature. The fuel medium being pumped flows over the magnet effecting cooling, with some diverting of flow through the armature for cooling. A further feature resides in the construction of an impeller having flow passage to the stator slots phased in such a manner that peak flow pressure at the slots is evened out around the impeller. Thus, the impeller vane spacing is related to that of the stator slots that only one flow pressure peak occurs at a time, and such peaks occur sequentually at widely spaced points around the rotary axis. This minimizes electric current peaks and brush sparking as well as bearing wear. The construction is fully sealed for submerged use in fuel tanks.
