TL;DR: In this paper, a toroidal shape of the slinger and its larger size contribute to a good pressure balance within the fluid composition as it circulates inside the casing during the mixing operation.
Abstract: Disclosed herein is an apparatus useful for blending solids with fluids. In a specific application of the blender (13), sand is mixed with a gel composition to obtain a fluid mixture suitable for stimulation treatments of oil and gas wells. Basic components of this blender are a slinger member (16) and an impeller member (17), which are enclosed within a casing (11). The slinger and impeller are fastened together, with the impeller being positioned underneath the slinger. In addition, the slinger has a toroidal configuration and the impeller has a vortex configuration, and the slinger has a larger surface area than the impeller. The toroidal shape of the slinger, and its larger size, contribute to a good pressure balance within the fluid composition as it circulates inside the casing during the mixing operation. A more thorough mixing of the sand and gel composition is achieved by improving the pressure balance in the manner described.

TL;DR: In this article, a fluid-friction clutch was fitted on the water-pump shaft which drives the impeller of a water pump for the internal combustion engine and being controlled by an expansion-type thermostat element which was located in a longitudinal bore through the water pump shaft.
Abstract: A fluid-friction clutch for a cooling fan of an internal combustion engine, the clutch being fitted on the water-pump shaft which drives the impeller of a water pump for the internal combustion engine and being controlled by an expansion-type thermostat element which is located in a longitudinal bore through the water-pump shaft. Cooling water of the internal combustion engine is applied directly to the expansion-type thermostat element, this water being continuously conveyed through the longitudinal bore in the water-pump shaft by utilizing the pressure-difference created in the cooling water by the impeller of the water pump. In order to cool both the working chamber of the fluid-friction clutch and the clutch-bearing, a cooling line is arranged inside the working chamber and connected to the cooling-water circulation inside the longitudinal bore through the water-pump shaft.

TL;DR: In this article, the main impeller on the pump shaft is made integral with an auxiliary impeller which constitutes a hydrodynamic shaft seal and prevents the flow of conveyed liquid chlorine into the tubular element from below.
Abstract: A machine for pumping liquid chlorine employs an upright shaft sump pump which is confined in a hermetically sealed housing and has a tubular supporting element surrounding the pump shaft. The latter is mounted in overhung position and is adjacent to a pressure pipe which conveys the pressurized liquid. The shaft seal is kept out of contact with the liquid by the housing as well as by a body of inert gas which is supplied to the interior of the housing and to the space between the shaft and the tubular element at a pressure depending on the pressure of inflowing liquid chlorine and being sufficiently high to prevent the inflow of liquid chlorine into the housing and/or tubular element when the pump is idle. The main impeller on the pump shaft is made integral with an auxiliary impeller which constitutes a hydrodynamic shaft seal and prevents the flow of conveyed liquid chlorine into the tubular element from below.

TL;DR: In this paper, a motor driven fuel pump adapted for use with a fuel injection system of an internal combustion engine has a pump housing and an impeller of regenerative pump type rotatably disposed in the housing and provided with circumferential rows of grooves formed in the opposite end faces of the impeller along the outer peripheral edges thereof.
Abstract: A motor driven fuel pump adapted for use with a fuel injection system of an internal combustion engine has a pump housing and an impeller of regenerative pump type rotatably disposed in the housing and provided with circumferential rows of grooves formed in the opposite end faces of the impeller along the outer peripheral edges thereof. The housing is formed therein with suction and discharge ports and cooperates with the impeller to define a fuel pressurizing passage extending circumferentially of the impeller and surrounding the grooved outer peripheral section thereof. The fuel pressurizing passage is circumferentially interrupted by a partition wall disposed between the suction and discharge ports and extending radially inwardly into close contacting relationship to the outer peripheral section of the impeller to prevent flow of fuel from the discharge port toward the suction port. The discharge port is tangential to the fuel pressurizing passage to facilitate smooth flow of the pressurized fuel from the passage into the discharge port and reduce the amount of material required for the pump housing.

TL;DR: In this paper, the characteristics of single-stage centrifugal compressors with backswept impellers and channel-type diffusers are presented and analyzed to formulate major performance criteria influencing maximum diffusion capability.
Abstract: Test results pertaining to the characteristics of single-stage centrifugal compressors with backswept impellers and channel-type diffusers are presented and analyzed to formulate major performance criteria influencing maximum diffusion capability. For any given stage, it was determined that stage surge (when triggered by diffuser stall), occurred near a constant mean stream velocity diffusion ratio between the impeller tip and diffuser throat. This diffusion ratio attained a maximum value of 1.8 for impeller tip Mach numbers less than unity, but was not unique for all stages, being more intimately coupled with throat blockage accumulation as a function of diffusion rate. This was identified by testing some vaned diffusers beyond the stall limit where rapid blockage accumulation precipitated an immediate decrease in channel diffuser and system static pressure recovery. The results of various experiments in the vaneless space are also described to illustrate the sensitivity of the vaneless space flow upon centrifugal compressor performance.Copyright © 1982 by ASME

Abstract: In order to measure a three dimensional flow field and turbulent characteristics behind an impeller, a periodic multi-sampling measuring system has been developed which consists of a slanted single hot wire probe connected to a pulse motor, a scanning pulse generator, an analogdigital converter and a micro computer. With this system, three components of the mean velocity and the six Reynolds stresses in a complicated turbulent flow can be determined more accurately than with the conventional methods. Typical experimental results are presented for a measurement of a flow field immediately behind an axial flow impeller to show the availability of this measuring system.

TL;DR: In this paper, an impeller is rotatably mounted in each channel to impart measured angular momentum to the fluid flowing in that channel and all of the impellers are driven by a common turbine and shaft.
Abstract: A flowmeter is provided for receiving a plurality of fluid streams and providing signals representative of the mass flow rate of each stream and the differential mass flow rate of any selected pair of the streams. A housing defines a flow channel to accommodate each stream to be measured. An impeller is rotatably mounted in each channel to impart measured angular momentum to the fluid flowing in that channel and all of the impellers are driven by a common turbine and shaft. The impellers are each resiliently coupled to the shaft so that the impellers lag behind the shaft by an amount proportional to the angular momentum imparted by each impeller to the fluid in its respective channel. Pick-off means associated with each impeller produce lag signals representative of the impeller lag angle and the lag signals are applied to a signal processor that produces individual mass flow rate signals and differential mass flow rate signals representative of the difference in mass flow rate of any two selected fluid streams.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of total pressure distortion on performance characteristics and surge margin of centrifugal compressors were investigated and the results indicated that the inlet distortion exerted unfavorable influences on the efficiency and the surge margin.
Abstract: The present paper concerns itself with the effects of total pressure (and thus velocity) distortion on performance characteristics and surge margin of centrifugal compressors. Both radial and circumferential distortions were investigated. The performance tests as well as the velocity measurements within the impeller passages were carried out with a low speed compressor test rig with the inlet honeycomb as the distortion generators and compared with the case of “no distortion” as a datum. The results indicated that the inlet distortion exerted unfavorable influences on the efficiency and the surge margin of the given compressor, though the influence of the radial distortion was much stronger than that of the circumferential one. Various distortion indices were further examined in order to correlate the performance to the inlet distortion.Copyright © 1982 by ASME

TL;DR: In this paper, the inlet velocity profile of the impeller was measured with traversing probes and was found to be significantly different from the profiles measured in an unthrottled condition.
Abstract: The flow through a centrifugal compressor impeller and a vaneless diffuser was investigated using unsteady pressure transducers and stationary probes when the compressor operated in the rotating stall region of the compressor map. The inlet velocity profile of the impeller was measured with traversing probes and was found to be significantly different from the profiles measured in an unthrottled condition. A zone of reverse flow was detected close to the suction duct wall as well as a strong swirl induced by the impeller. Circumferentially and meridionally spaced transducers made it possible to determine the stall frequency and the number of stall cells. The amplitude of the flow distortion as a function of meridional position was calculated from meridionally spaced transducers.Copyright © 1982 by ASME

Abstract: An improved centrifugal pump of the end suction type having a mechanical seal and a ball bearing contained in a unique stuffing box about a rotating impeller shaft. The box positions the bearing close to the impeller and reduces the bending movement of the shaft at the seal in severe services, e.g., pump startup conditions in drilling mud systems. Also, the box is arranged for the ready removal or replacement of the machanical seal or bearing. The pump has a casing defining an annular chamber wherein an impeller is driven by rotatable pump shaft. The box is mounted in a cover secured to the casing. The cover has a concentric central opening providing an annulus about the shaft. The box is seated by step surfaces in the central opening and secured to the cover by bolts. The mechanical seal is mounted about the shaft against an inwardly facing stepped surface within the box. The bearing is releaseably mounted on the shaft and has an external cylindrical surface seated against an outwardly stepped surface in the box.

TL;DR: In this article, axisymmetric diffuser exit throttle was used to delay the occurrence of self-excited flow oscillation in vaneless diffusers and Sharp edge rings were installed at diffuser exiting in order to change the exit flow area.
Abstract: Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of axisymmetric diffuser exit throttle in delaying the occurrence of self-excited flow oscillation in vaneless diffusers. Sharp edge rings were installed at diffuser exit in order to change the exit flow area. Tests were carried out with the rings attached to one or both of the diffuser walls. Steady and unsteady flow measurements were used to determine the flow field in the diffuser at the onset of the flow oscillations. Results showed that the occurrence of flow oscillation was continuously delayed as the diffuser exit flow area was reduced for all these configurations and impeller speeds. Comparison between the performance of the compression system with and without diffuser exit blockage indicated that although large losses occur at high flow rates, the use of diffuser exit rings resulted in overall diffuser performance improvement at low flow rates. Retractable diffuser exit rings would therefore be ideal for centrifugal compression systems with vaneless diffuser.Copyright © 1982 by ASME
